OP is simply exploring the hidden worlds that surround us. I can find no spiritual fault with that. I only wish I could do it with intent, not just accidental chance happenings like happens to all of us. By your statement, you are an occultist if you have dreams while sleeping. OP goes to the leading edge of the conscious state and full sleep at the same time. What’s so evily wrong about that? OP, did not ask for this ability and nor can he stop it from happening. He just needs to develop the gift that he has and use it to find the answers that we all would like to find. We are all born with this innate ability. Why it comes easily to some and not others is probably because it is a result of living many lifetimes or some would call it "being an old soul" what ever the reason you should not knock it until you've tried it.
