Quoting: xpiggyx 35: Your short-term memory begins to weaken and decline. once u hit 35, its downhill from there Granted there is a peak, by definition, but the contours of the downhill curve vary widely. Age 35 is an average, not a foregone conclusion for individuals and depends on individual health and mental exercise. Those who sit around watching a steady diet of Hollywood garbage and spectator sports for decades on end, idling their brains in an entrained alpha state, are going to decline much faster. Plus, the older folks who retain a large degree of mental acuity can draw on a life of accumulated wisdom and lessons learned. The elders know a lot of what not to do. We've all seen mentally facile younger people who can be top-fuel funny cars of stupid, and older people who aren't geniuses who are fonts of practical wisdom. Truth is, we need both youthful brains and energy and older wisdom to survive, and the more we realize it, the better things will go. Peace. |

Not everyone declines the same, but overall if you don’t make yourself better you might hit your peak way earlier. Im 31, but. I do not see myself hitting peak intelligence until I’m 40. |

When you personally stop being inquisitive or asking questions, then sure, you stop learning. I am 54 and still learning every day and don’t feel like I’m forgetting anything. But again, if this study is correct I have 20 years of more experience in my head than you do at 34. So sure I could forget a couple years. I believe if you put good things into your head, read books, study subjects, ask questions then your brain neurons are wired a certain way for learning. If you put crap in your head, your rewiring your neurons for a poor learning experience. “I’m the wall that progress ran into" |

I guess it's not the same for everyone, you can probably maintain it if you practice. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79415507 This holds true for me. I refused vaccination and so I was locked out of my mentally demanding job. I started to notice cognitive decline after the first month of being idle. I'm now brushing up on some long-forgotten math and taking online courses to gain new certifications. I feel like I'm becoming sharp again, but it's not happening overnight. I think the decline can be rapid for some, and the road back is an uphill climb. I fear retirement will end me if I don't exercise my intellect. |
