But now there are more than three million researchers in the United States alone. It is no longer a vocation, it is a career. Science is a human activity as corruptible as any other. Its practitioners are not saints, they are human beings, and they do what human beings do: lie, cheat, steal from each other, sue, hide quotes, false data, exaggerate their own importance, and unfairly denigrate opposing views. That is human nature. And it's not going to change."
