You would have to earn $380,000 per year to have the same wealth as your average gilded age peasant.
 Quoting: Queue_for_Q

That's because money was real back then unlike today's fiat currency.

After the Continental Currency fiasco, the US had gotten its act together and produced a monetary unit that was actually stable and worth as much as gold, coal, lumber, etc. that was being produced.

By this point, the bankers had already bankrupt Europe as they extended their loans to finance both sides of most, if not all, major European conflicts prior to the creation of the United States.

Those nations became indebted to the people behind the Bank of England who wanted more and set their eyes on America because that was the only place where real money was at the time. The only way these financiers were able to get their hands this money was to impose a central bank like the Bank of England over the US, hence the First & Second Banks of the United States, and siphon the wealth of the Dollar through interest payments.

This is why Andrew Jackson fought and defeated the bankers to an extent.

"To an extent" because the bankers eventually came back and created the Third Bank of the United States, but this time they called it the Federal Reserve with the propaganda to remove the financial grip that The Money Trust had on US money supply.

The problem is that the Federal Reserve was drafted by the very people it was supposed to remove the economic stranglehold from, that being The Money Trust themselves.

The end result: A Dollar that buys a nickels worth.

Got to love Keynesian economics and fiat currency.

The only thing masking it is that technology is plentiful and we have slave labor in 3rd world countries.

Why a dollar today is worth only 15% of a dollar in 1972

$100 in 1972 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $666.99 today, an increase of $566.99 over 50 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.87% per year between 1972 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 566.99%.

The cost of goods has fallen even further than that.

What a working class person has access to these days in terms of material gadgets and technology is more than any pharaoh, ancient king, or empororor could have ever drempt of.

A poor man who can afford an old used cellphone and get access to free wifi internet has access to far more knowledge than the president of the United States did just 50 years ago.

Make use of it.

Its true my father in the mid 80s was making near 80 grand a year....

Most people i grew up with, the dads were making that ....about 35 an hour with nice bonuses ....

Now...people make around 40 grand or so ....HAlF...while everything is 3 times as expensive ...

Yea this is a dying country that's for sure!...

Could easily buy a new truck in the 80s for 15 grand and a new car for 9 grand...

Gas around 80 cents ....Food you could buy for a family of 4 for 200 bucks for the whole month....

Now as you know...Easily you spend 600 bucks on a family of 4.....for a month...

Gas almost around 5 bucks,as a new car is 25 grand....

Plus back in the 80s you could buy a new house for 40 grand...Or make one with nice property for 80 grand ....

Yea we have a dying country ....no doubt about it .....

My dad n his friend used to go gold prospecting when gold was only at 200 bucks ...

They made enough to keep the hobby going....

My aunt in the 2000s was making 120 grand year till she retired ....

The middle class is shrinking because ,as i grew up i knew everyone that was middle class....Today ...i can count on 1 hand the middle class people...it is a dying country ....

At one time, I remember inflation/deflation reference was to the dollar in 1967.

I'd guess the ratio is very close to 9X.
In 1970,if you made $20,000/yr you were doing great.

I watched the value of everything slide sideways over 40 years and after someone tried to kill me, it's not worth trying to work disabled.

Advantage of capital and a controlled, fearful labor force ensures every profitable measure feeds the corporation.

Never is any increase in productivity distributed to workers.

130 years ago money was money, now it is mostly debt. Well over 90% that has since gone to bankers pockets while every dollar depreciates in value. Doesn't matter to them since they keep loaning out more and don't work for it anyway.

Re: Wages Have Decreased by 92% Over The Last 130 Years Since the Gilded Age:
Yep. In 1979 I had a brief union job at a supermarket stocking shelves. I was making $16/hour. My rent in a bachelor suite in Vancouver's west end was $235/month. My hydro was $12 every two months. A bus ride was 50 cents. Down the street there was a veggie mart, every week I would spend around 5 bucks to fill a bag with vegetables and fruit for the week. In less than a year I was able to save 10K and used that to travel around the US using my thumb all the way to Mexico.

Now someone doing that same job is making around $15/hour but their bus to work costs at least $2.75 each way and more if they live farther away. You can't find a bachelor suite in the suburbs for under $1200/month (the suite I lived in now rents for $2000/month), your hydro is at least $100/month and 5 dollars might get you a cauliflower.

I feel bad for the young folks just starting out. They have no chance of saving a penny on an entry level job. At work we have a girl with a masters degree making $17/hour.
 Quoting: KeepingItReal

Uh- master’s in what? English? Communications? “Business?” If you have a master’s in something useful, you are NOT stocking shelves....

Our interns in quant master’s programs make $30/hour at my company. And when we hire them full time they get $90,000 as an entry level salary. Plus annual bonus of 10-20% based on company performance.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80141333

I didn't say she is stocking shelves. She has a useless masters in Psychology, and she ends up taking a job that isn't related to her field just to pay the rent and eat, and she isn't the only one. In her own field there is nothing available and starting her own business is prohibitively expensive and full of taxes, permits and regulations. I encourage young people to go into the trades, but lately that isn't a sure thing either as immigrants are being moved in to keep the wages down in the trades.
 Quoting: KeepingItReal

This is preposterous. She can teach psych from a minimum of 50k per year. There are literally thousands of jobs you can do with a psych degree. There is some other factor you're not disclosing.
