Gardeners Please Step In
Well, I know next to nothing about growing a garden, but back in October I had some red potatoes that were in the cabinet too long and were growing eyes. As a test, I took two of them into my backyard by the shed. One, I threw onto the ground while saying "Good luck!" The other, I planted about 2 inches under the soil.

I watered each of them every 2-3 days.

The one laying on the ground was half eaten by some sort of animals and looked really disgusting after a couple of weeks.
The second one started growing a green stalk.

After one month, both had formed leafy plants - even the half-eaten one!

Now it is early February, and we had a hard freeze twice in central Florida, so I decided that it was "Harvest Time".

How exciting!

Both plants were burned up and dead for sure.

I got a pronged implement to dig and went to the shed.

Ooops! Some critter already dug up a perfect red potato and saved me some work. No damage on it, but the color is off on one side from laying exposed, I guess?

I started digging and the biggest winner was the half-eaten yard thrown potato plant! It had 5 potatoes growing ON TOP OF THE GROUND compared to the cared-for plant that only had 3 under the ground.

So, there you go, experiment is complete, and I will let these grown in the cabinet and do a proper planting next time. I am not eating any of them because some are as small as a grape. The largest is about 3 inches.

Any advice?

The only reason I harvested was because the freeze got them. I didn't know to wait only 3 months. Thanks for the info. If I throw a carrot on the ground will it grow too? I cut the top off of a pineapple and stuck it in the dirt. Its been 2 years and it is doing great but no pineapple. How much longer?

Potatoes are pretty easy don't eat the green ones. Save those for seed. This is my first year of growing only my own saved potatoes. They grow fine in pots but my deep raised beds produced the most.

Oh wow pots? I have some big pots I could use in the patio. It gets afternoon sun. That would keep the critters out. Something is digging them up then they get ruined.

How deep do you bury them? Do you cut each eye out that sprouts and then plant it?

Good on you, I have some red and lilac sprouting ATM.
You can put them in a pot or a bag or whatever you got and put them outside when it's not freezing anymore. Dont forger drainage.
Just put a bit of soil in, potatoes, bit of soil.wait till the green stalks are 10inch, then bury them in soil again. Do this some more times, then let it grow and bloom.

We have a saying (it's a rhyme but doesn't work in English) about planting potatoes here
"plant me in April, I grow whenever I want, plant me in may, I'll grow instantly".

You can put the whole potatoes in or cut it in half (depending on size). No need to cut anything out, quite the opposite!

There are some good yt videos from potato growers. Suggest watching. The better the soil, the better your results will be. Find a grower in your same climate. Watching a guy in Ireland isn’t much help if you live in Florida.

Go to you tube. There are miriad ways of growing potatoes in small spaces. Theres a trash can method, a tire method...we even gren them in reusable tote bags one year. If you dont have the space to mound them, these methods use the idea of adding a layer. For example, with the tire method you add a tire and fill up with dirt...with the tote method, you roll down the tote ar planting and unroll and fill to mound. Mounding is the most neccesary part, to prevent greening and maximum harvest.

Last note. Always keep a big bag of epsom salt as a gardener. Sprinkle at the base of the plants several times per growing season and let the rain water it in. We need the magnesium in our diet and plants love it.

Re: Gardeners Please Step In
Maybe they were potatoes that grow above the ground?
Think they're called sweet potatoes.
Anyway, I also experimented as newby and buried a lot of peels.
They all became potato plants.

Mounding? So, I was supposed to add more dirt when the stalks came up? If that why the potatoes tried to grow on top of the ground? I thought they grow deep but I guess not.

They prefer loose (unpacked) dirt on top. You mound them to keep the light off the growing tubers. Try not to over water, as they do not like to be too wet all the time (let nature water unless there is drought) Ots great fun growing.potatoes. We are still eating what we harvested in september.

Re: Gardeners Please Step In
The best potatoes I ever grew were in old, square bay bales that had rotted for a year. Then I just stuck three potatoes in each one.
The return was amazing like 10:1
Potatoes like poor soil with good drainage.
If you’re in Florida, you should try sweet potatoes!
