The problem with magic is that it involves repeated lying and deception.

That lying might be with one’s tongue, one’s hands or one’s equipment, it might be lies of omission or commission, but it is all falsehoods nonetheless, designed to effect an illusion, which in itself is a lie.

As a young man in my twenties, I had a career as a professional magician, both stage and closeup. It required countless hours of devoted practice but was quite lucrative; however, I gave it up entirely, since as a Christian I never felt comfortable with the deceptions required. As a magician, one never really says what one means, says nothing about what one actually does and in effect uses NLP to control, to a greater or lesser extent, the minds of the audience. The intentional deceiving of others pays the bills.

More disturbing to me, more than openly lying, was the fact that, although few in number, there were certain magicians who used dark forces to accomplish their illusions - this was an open secret in the magic fraternity, and there was actually a considerable schism regarding it, as many felt (quite correctly) that it was evil.
