There was a precedent passed in 1945 that mandated that all real estate records be kept in a safe that could withstand multiple nuclear blasts ongoing. You've got the best shot in there with those old books. When I walk into every REC room, my phone will not work ever...

They've been planning on attacking the world for some time now.

In dry weather, you can use storm sewers for emergency shelters. You an rig a "key" by attaching stout wire to two bolts. One bolt goes down the hole in the manhole cover; the upper bolt is the handle to lift it.

However, a basement is much better. You can add mass of sandbags, furniture with drawers full of dirt, containers of water, etc. to put mass above and to your sides. You can do something similar on a ground floor with slab. Just need a lot of mass around your hidey hole. You only need a space large enough to lay down in.

If you don't have a rad meter, the book referenced above has instructions on how to fabricate a meter from common household items. No joke! I made one before I bought an actual geiger counter.

Could you please dumb this down for my stupid ass? Are you saying you know where there is a bomb shelter for every county in the US? And if so, are they stocked? If not, I don't think they will help us much, unfortunately, because we can't take things there ahead of time and there is no way we can get enough supplies there for everyone in a last second situation.

I promise I'm not trying to be a poothead here. I'm sincerely trying to understand.
