But it's apparently safe for them to be there, in the open, in a war zone?

They claim people are hiding in basements and underground subways... but the reporters are apparently bullet proof.

Putin has said that he's only performing surgical strikes on military and government bases on the Eastern Ukraine borders.

That's where he wants NATO gone from. The rest of Ukraine, it was agreed by both russia and the west decades ago, would be neutral. The west didn't hold their end of the deal.

Anyway, putin has denied targeting civilian targets in Kiev.

Based on these feeds I'd say Putin is not lying, but western media is.
