Yesterday it was churches and unarmed protestors, and today it's stealing food from citizens and shelling evacuation routes, and watching children die of not having water.

The humanitarian crisis that is happening in Ukraine cannot be ignored even if you are a complete jerk. Their people, whether the government our government or Russia's is all responsible for this disaster, it doesn't matter. What matters is that people are on the ground now dying from war crimes. People will remember this and I hope this site's mod steps up against the people who cheer on death and mayhem.

There is no way Nato or the US would ever strike a first blow with a nuke unless Russia launched something or did something that was interpreted as a first strike against a NATO nation.

Our military doesn't implement the use tactical nukes in the same way Russia does and no way is someone going straight to a long ranged missile based platform because it could trigger Armageddon.

We are in such uncharted territory that I hesitate to even make a guess what happens from here but my first notion would be a cyber option. Maybe shooting down a satellite with an orbital based platform ( Russia allegedly has this in their arsenal ) or possibly cutting or interfering with international data cables under sea. There is also the possibility they have some crazy secret no-nuclear weapons that they would bring out. I see even thw use a tactical nuke being a provocation that neither side would risk because of what door it opens.

During the cold war, the USSR believed that while they would sustain significant damage, they believed it was survivable. They built extensive fallout shelters as a result.

I was reading this past fall, that Russia had refurbished those shelters and were doing some drills in major cities.

Remember that Putin is ex-KGB and could very well still hold that same belief.

If pushed too far, Putin could set off a couple low yield tactical nukes to show he means business. What happens from there is anybody's guess.
