It’s like if you have played World of Warcraft and earn gold in the game, you can sell that gold in real life by trading it with a person for fiat money. (Against the terms of service of the game and you could get banned from it but it’s not illegal). Virtual currencies are just like stocks or other properties and can be traded for a centralized currency. The IRS sees crypto as property so you have to report it on your income taxes. Either way.. the government finds a way to make money off of you with crypto. you have to report mining rewards as income and selling for a capital gain as another type of income. Even purchasing a Starbucks coffee with crypto is considered a taxable event because you are exchanging crypto for a fiat money value.
