OK, so revealing that I am a geezer, I was in first grade when the Cuban missile crisis happened, living in eastern Virginia just across from Norfolk Naval Base. You can see some Nike missile launchers within bicycle riding distance of my home.

We had duck and cover drills in school, even when we were six years old.

There were model "fallout shelters" as they called them then in the park and Civil Defense fallout shelter signs on building basements everywhere, as if we could survive a thermonuclear war.

Sometimes in the evening when my father was watching Walter Cronkite on the evening news, he looked really worried, even though I didn't know exactly what was going on. But I could sense that it wasn't good.

And now, sixty years later, here we are again and my grandson was watching the news with me, wondering why I look so worried.

And we have far more nuclear warheads now.
