is anyone else just not buying oil/gas? plan B
I want to preface this by saying that here in my region many people heat their homes with home-heating oil (which is very similar to the diesel gas at the pump). (thanks to the poster who said there might be a need for explanation)

I'm so stubborn. Last oil bill, when the price had gone up to double, I just turned off my furnace and I refuse to turn it back on again until about December. (or if prices reduce)

Anyone else?

(It was 19 degrees F when I got up this morning. 55 in the kitchen, LOL)

Edits: I've added an explanation of home heating oil, and the phrase plan B to my title and want to open up this thread to all ideas that help us get un-addicted to oil/gas.

I learned pretty quickly that you can't just turn your furnace all the way down to 55 thinking it would never get down that low, LOL. The damn thing was on this morning. I had to turn it all the way OFF.

It really does show you always need a plan B for everything;. Otherwise they have you over an oil barrel.

The conspiracy mind in me wonders if this is what they WANT... ie for us useless eaters to stop using up resources?

But anywho, I don't care.

I actually feel kind of bad for the local oil company if nobody buys their oil. They are nice people.

But supply-and-demand is a thing.

If you reduce demand... prices fall, right?

It will take a lot of hardship to completely detach from oil.

They've really got us over a barrel, so to speak.

We don't have oil furnaces out west.

I didn't know that! I wonder what replaces oil for heat out west? Propane tanks?

Have natural gas and propane have all risen in price too?

I wonder a bit if people are going to charge more for firewood because -voila- they use gas to cut it up?

The propane tank setting outside my house is the reason for the wood stove. It get's stupid expensive to keep warm.

Yes, it's gone up here about 20 bucks per rick this year. If I didn't cut it myself it would not be worth it. I work from home so I can feed my fire all day and the heater stays off.

I spend about 2-3 hours every month on the wood pile to keep it stocked.

I love my wood stove, even when oil is cheaper. It's just so very comfortable to be near.

My wood stove won't stop pipes from freezing however... Ask how I know! But we can do just the wood stove in the spring. In February we'd have to shut down some of our water pipes. It's doable but would need planning.

Electricity is pretty cheap compared to everything else. I didn't use any propane for heating this winter. My electric bills were all outrageous, but I think I saved money in the long run.

I don't even know what oil is going for by the barrel, but found this:

"Oil prices dipped by more than 5% early on Tuesday, with the U.S. benchmark WTI slumping to just below $100 a barrel after signs emerged that the resumption of the Russia-Ukraine peace talks after two weeks may have been constructive."
-oilprice.com

I like your post but I want to be sure I'm taking your meaning right. Do you mean they kept oil prices exceedingly low to squelch alternative energy, and now the reserves are gone and we have to pay the real price now?

They made us into addicts and now drugs ain't free no more?

And the Texas Tycoon isn't going to be able to buy that 5 million dollar third home?

I remember long ago on GLP it was a common thing to see "peak oil" threads.. and how long it would take to reach peak oil... and how we would know... and what life would be like after the oil dried up...

I suppose that is a nice parallel to the government getting involved in food prices, making Big Ag food cheaper than what local farmers can produce.

Making people addicts to Walmart.

And then whoops, no food on the Walmart shelves because the Big Ag quarter million dollar tractors won't run... on account of they don't have a 200$ part from China. Without the part, the EPA won't allow the tractors to START. Because "global warming".

So, I support my local farmer. However, and this really pisses me off,

My local farm milk went up by 30% two weeks ago. Why? (I know this sounds petty but that means I will spend 520$ a year on milk now rather than 390$ which already seemed like a LOT)

Isn't NOW the time for local farm foods to STAY at their current prices and show that we should have been supporting them all along? Isn't it their time to shine?

Is it because the local farmer needs a raise to keep up with inflation?

I suppose he needs to heat his house!

People it's time to turn all of our lawns into pastures and landscape into food gardens and all of our glades of forest (between the houses)into managed wood lots.

People without a "plan B" are too easy to manipulate.
