Serious discussion - electric vehicles ( EVs )
So the whole concept fascinated me on many levels, I am an IT and very technically minded. I also dabble know solar systems and off grid energy so I figure it could also serve as a “ battery on wheels “ extra capacity for a solar array lol. But anyway seriously considering one. Like a lightly used Nissan Leaf or a VW E-golf, your talking 15-25k and you get some federal tax credits if you get it from a dealership…. I’ve been researching how these public level 2/3 DC charging stations work and what the costs are. Some networks have membership fees which basically just makes the cost per use slightly cheaper and easier sign in because you have a phone app for it. Like going to Redbox and renting a movie with your phone. Anyway depending on commercial power rates here in CFL for instance Duke charges 8-11c / kWh, residential is slightly higher but your talking $1.50 - $3 to fill your “ tank “. And that will get you 100-150 miles in a standard lower end EV. There’s also regenerative breaking, onboard charging systems and variable kinds of air conditioning and heating out there for them like I have leaned they ALL have heated seats. Turns out it’s less energy to heat your ass than the whole car lol. Anyway it’s fascinating and I’m actually considering one. I have a full size gas guzzling pick up truck this would just be a secondary vehicle run around locally and go to the beaches and shit plus you get all the prime parking spots everywhere and tax credits and what not.

We all like to laugh at the EV craze of these liberals around here but has anyone actually sat and done the math and research a little, depending on your situation it actually is something to consider….

I know I’ll catch hell for this post but - serious thoughts please ;)

Although producing EVs and electricity for them pollutes the environment more than petroleum-fueled vehicles, there is a place for them in dense cities because they reduce local pollution. China uses this policy very effectively.

Yeah I mean. Mining the lithium and nickel is environmentally destructive and they have yet to figure out an effective method of recycling lithium batteries so it produces hazardous waste but there are a plethora of companies out there looking for new and better ways to store energy. I heard of one company even making a battery out of hemp. Lol. No joke. So I feel like it’s really a matter of time before that problem is solved and they find a more environmentally friendly way of producing energy storage. As far as charging them sure - the power comes from the grid but like in my case I have solar power I can charge it from the sun at home. With the gas prices rising I’m spending 80-100 a week filling my damn truck that $250 EV car payment doesn’t sound so bad. Lol.

On the surface EVs sound great. However, It’s the repair costs that make them a huge gamble. I just saw the other day where someone had a 22k repair bill on a few year old tesla. The batteries alone cost thousands to replace. They are truly throw away vehicles if you think about it. It only makes financial sense to own one if you trade your vehicle every 2 years or so.

Joining the campaign just feels dirty to me.

I love internal combustion, linkages and all things tangible and mechanical. I just can't join the rush to make those things extinct.

Plus, driving them feels less interactive than ever. If I want a video game, that's at home where it belongs.

what do you do with 1000 tons of new dead batteries each year ?

Yeah I wouldn’t get a Tesla. Screw that. I am leaning slightly used VW E-Golf because it has one major advantage over the Nissan Leaf that it’s level 3 ( fast DC charging ) standard is more widely deployed Nissan has its own you are less likely to find a charging station supports it and be forced to use level 2. (240v slower charging). But they are both lower end cheaper EVs easily attainable affordable prices.

Tesla apparently has horrible business practices if you want to repair your vehicle. Expect to pay massively more for simple repairs if your EV breaks. Once your warranty is out they don't want anything to do with you anymore.

Never mind the fact your Tesla isn't really yours. They have built in systems and back doors to shut off your car and remotely drive it away.

Re: Serious discussion - electric vehicles ( EVs )
Battery packs will keep getting smaller and more efficient over the next decade. In 20 years the pack will be half the size with a 2000 mile range per charge. Just be patient, the electric car is a good thing but we are in the early stages of it.

One day it’ll be 20 min charge for 800 mile range. At that point humanity will forget about the old days with ice’s
