They will cut corners with materials to make the cars lighter. Pay attention to the relaxing of laws that surround vehicle safety standards too.

A blend of Prius type hybrids, electric hybrids, and all electric are the only way they can meet those fleet averages.

(keep in mind that due to the wacky way those "Fleet Averages" are calculated one is really probably talking 40-42 mpg combined fleet averages in real life)

The day and age of 15mpg gas guzzlers are GONE. Shoot even a Chevy Suburban is up to the 21mpg city /27mpg highway range now (wish my old suburban came close to that, but NO it averages about 14 around town and 16 on the highway)

The new Toyota Sienna hybrid mini van, which is pretty large, now gets 36mpg in the 2wd version which is better than even most small hybrids of just 7 years ago.

Moving the old gas guzzlers into a more modern drive train will bring the fleet averages up A LOT as old 14mpg average vehicles are moved into being 25mpg average vehicles

Volkswagen makes some of the world's best turbodiesels: efficient and powerful. You can get them in Europe but ever since America threw VW under the bus with that bullshit emissions lawsuit years ago, VW no longer sells their best stuff here. Turbodiesels and hybrids are the way to go. Pure electric is a scam and not practical for average folks.

They had a factory CRX in 1985 that got 53.

Then they had the Insight hybrid in 96/7 that was around 65-70mpg.

It's all a big, fake front, at least in the US. The euro spec diesels (same models we get in the US) that get such great mileage will never make it here because the EPA caves to the Big 3 every single time.

Hint... you know what industry will not use Lithium battery's?

The flight industry...

Why...

Lithium batteries produce dangerous heat levels, cause ignition, short circuit very easy and cause inextinguishable fires

Imagine the landfills on permanent fire! Soon...

Aviation has banned their use but ya its totally safe for you and your car being hit by illegals with no insurance lmao! 500,000 coming to the road near you!

Re: New vehicles sold in the U.S. must average 49 mpg fleet-wide by 2026
It’s not about getting manufacturer’s to get the fleet average up. Its not possible to hit those numbers in anything but small hybrids. It’s about switching to full electric and it’s buying carbon credits from ev producers like Tesla. So Dodge/ram/etc obviously will miss quota. They are then forced to buy credits from Tesla to offset the bad fleet avg.

Also why so many companies have announced they are going fully electric by whatever year they’ve got planned. It’s not what the majority of their buyers want but what the companies are being strong armed into building.

It’s basically redistribution of wealth to ev producers.
You don’t build enough ev you get taxed to death....

It costs me 4 dollars just to get up to 80 mph now in my 5.6 liter Nissan.

It's ridiculous. They're paying 9 cents a gallon in Iran and about 10 cents a gallon in Venezuela

I have heard rumors that the ability for vehicles to run 50 mpg has been around since the 70s, but the oil companies put a stop to it. I tried to research it but couldn't find anything concrete.

Yes they even had models in the 1990's that would hit almost 50MPG.

That was before the advent of all the more modern computer systems / EFI control that they have now. Like someone said, they have big old trucks getting 25mph now - they should be able to make a small all gas car that gets 50+ MPG with little effort.

it is funny how most of the comments here actually WANT gas guzzlers for some reason. It is almost an American status symbol to own a car that unnecessarily sucks down fuel?

I'm wondering why the biofuel idea wasn't such a success. It would be more self sustaining then lithium batteries.

It's all about displacement.
The smaller the engine, the better the MPG.

After that, minor things like engine RPM, Compression, tire pressure, etc.
