Objectively speaking (and I really mean that), Hillary's dumbest moves were:

(1) NOT DIVORCING BILL immediately post-White House, and starting her own political career earlier. She'd have had a lot of folks in her corner, and could have established her own identity, instead of being saddled with Bill's history.

(2) WAITING UNTIL HER mid-50s to seek ANY kind of elective office -- so that she's 60 years old, and her only elective experience is one (1) Senate term.

(3) LEANING ON "EXPERIENCE," because:
-- When people do the math, they realize that 29 of her "35 years of experience" consist solely of being Bill's wife (and First Lady of Arkansas and the U.S.)
No matter HOW much you know, or what you do: Being married to a CEO isn't the same as BEING the CEO, having a defined job, and being accountable to the public.
So your "experience" really just consists of working for your spouse.
-- Her experience-touting makes too many people remember the Clinton Years ... which even shafted Democrats, and led to GWB's election and a GOP congressional boost.
-- By emphasizing her alleged GOP-busting experience, she frames the whole presidency in terms of conflict and mud-wrestling. But voters had 8 yrs of this with GWB, anad 8 yrs of it with Bill (if they're old enough to remember), and want SOMETHING ELSE, please ... which is why Obama appeals to them.

(4) NOT TELLING BILL TO SHUT UP AND STAY HOME. His misspeaks and over-eagerness to get backinto the White House have shot HC in the foot.
And younger women, at least, definitely notice the disconnect when someone claims to be a feminist, but is overdependent on her husband, his coattails, and political favors that others owe to him.

(5) TAKING THINGS FOR GRANTED. With all the $$ in her campaign, couldn't she get an image/speech consultant to warm up her image, help her sound less officious/smirky/snippy, frame issues in a non-wonky way, be less stiff, and find some "real" self -- LONG ago?
Or did she think this wasn't necessary, and that Bill's (alleged) charm and glad-handing would make up for her weaknesses? (i.e., has she gotten over-used to being "half of a couple"? If so, that's reallllly bad.)
Unlike HC: Most people who seek public office (or even a job in business or ministry!) KNOW that they need to mind their speaking style and "presentation." It's not fakery: It's just that what works among friends can be misperceived by others. (Someone can come across as strident/mechanical instead of as strong, or as wishy-washy instead of as empathetic.) And an offputting presentation completely kills your message.

So since the primaries began, I've been slapping myself in the forehead, going "I can't believe Hill/Bill did that!" and "Who the &@%! are her consultants?" and "Do these people have their heads in a hole?" and "Is it 'Elvis Syndrome' - where people are afraid to tell you that you're screwing yourself up?"
It's as if the whole campaign was based on some math formula ("X-squared + square root of Y + Z = Naturally, I Win"), or as if it's an academic program: Earn 86 credits, and they MUST give you the U.S. presidency. Which is book-smart and life-stupid.

At least with Giuliani, we sensed that his gut wasn't really in it: When Rudy REALLY wants something, he goes for the throat.

But HC has me totally baffled: I've seen middle-school class' campaigns that are savvier than this thing.
