They've got weapons far worse than nukes right now. COVID was a perfect example of how biological warfare is the WMD of the future. Imagine if the virus had actually been dangerous instead of a measly copy of the common cold. The Chinese in particular have been working on racially targeted bioweapons that could potentially purge the world of anyone they don't like without destroying land and infrastructure. They could just wipe our cities clean, roll in and set up shop themselves. Then you've got the classified directed energy weapons like the Tesla howitzer and tight-beam makers. Scary stuff.

I tried to escape this hellish plant of giant neanderthal meat-heads, but lacked the fuel to return to the Enterprise.

In a last desparate attempt to signal the Enterprise which should have broken orbit an hour before, I jettisoned my fuel in a long trail, which I intended to ignite at the last moment, creating a huge signal flare that the Enterprise might notice and rescue me.

It would not ignite, (cheap piezo igniter from Kirk's old Weber grill), and all was lost... until at the last moment, Kirk beamed me and the shuttle back aboard.

Sulu gave me a wet sloppy kiss and then we had a 3 way with Uhura in the turbo.. but that is a story for another day.

To save the country they should try to do it with the least amount of kinetic damage. Keep infrastructure intact. A bioweapon or some shit might be a good idea.
