I'm happy I grew up in the 70s when stewardesses looked like this. You millennials have screwed things up for yourselves

IMO the pilot was smuggling something (drugs) and needed to Gate and unload at JFK where he could get away with it.

...

They were supposed to land at JFK. They made 4 attempts but the pilots decided it was too dangerous so they landed at the Newark Airport in Jersey.

Instead of just letting them off in Newark they made them sit on the plane for 7hours so they could takeoff from Newark and Land at JFK like they were supposed to.

To be clear Newark is a 1hr and 15min drive from JFK.

They wasted an extra 6hours of their time by not just letting them off at Newark.

Id be furious and looking to sue them.

I hate flying anyway so there's a chance I may have beaten the shit out of a staff member just to get off the plane.

Youre flying in a petri dish and they're making you sit in it for an extra 6hours?

In the era of covid there's a case here.

Yup, that holding them hostage bit i inexcusable.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79470017

It's NOT true. They were in Newark for one hour.
 Quoting: nutmeg

Then I stand corrected. I suppose what theyre saying is the entire ordeal took 7 hours.

I suppose the argument at that point is they shouldnt have attempted 4 landings at an airport that had questionable landing conditions.

Perhaps they shouldve just landed at Newark to begin with and informed the passengers they couldn't make it to JFK.

Suppose my point is that by the time we landed at Newark I would've been beyond irate and wouldve done anything to get off.

You've failed not once, not twice, not three times, but FOUR times to land the plane at JFK and now youre telling me I should sit here for an hour - let you take off AGAIN - and make a 5th attempt cause the weather will be nicer?

It's an 1hr and 15min drive. I get that it's an inconvenience but the airline screwed this up. However you want to spin it someone somewhere made a big mistake. Either the pilot had business flying the plane or making the initial calls to land or they made an mistake not letting them off at Newark.

Altogether though I don't care...this is another wonderful example of why I won't fly ever again.

Newark Customs likely refused the flight.
It has happened before…

its a plane, you see many don't live in reality. flying aircraft dont take off or land in a cross wind, you can try.
i dont fly.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80401262

All FAA certified aircraft have a crosswind component.

As a pilot, I can assure you airplanes take off and land in crosswinds all the time.
May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't.

Re: JetBlue passengers revolt after 4 failed landing attempts, beg to get off at Newark - hostage for hours
Chaos erupted on a JetBlue flight when passengers diverted due to weather were told they would be flying back to their original destination instead of being allowed to deplane. The passengers were headed to JFK International Airport from Cancun in stormy weather when the pilots had to abort the landing four times. The flight tracker shows the wild path it took over New York City before giving up and diverting to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The two airports are 33 miles apart.

“We gotta get off this plane, It’s dangerous. We tried to land four times already. It’s dangerous. We’re scared to fly. We want to get off.”

Not sure where the "7 hour hostage" story came from. This says they were on the ground at Newark for 60 minutes.

“Without proper customs processing available for the flight at Newark, the aircraft remained on the ground for 60 minutes and once the weather cleared departed again for JFK where it safely landed,” .....

I would have solved that problem real quick, simply by taking off my mask. The plane being on the ground, they HAVE to get you off. And I'll claim a medical emergency, too.

I'm surprised they didn't duck tape him to a seat, arrest him and slap an $80,000 fine on him for interfering with a flight crew.

Remember when stewardesses dressed like hookers in high heels and mini-skirts with lots of cleavage?

Now they hate you and treat you like hostages.

$50.00 credit?

Airlines are NOT responsible for weather problems. The passengers are lucky they received $50.00!
 Quoting: nutmeg

If you read the fine print they're not responsible for anything. You just pay money to eat peanuts and maybe land whenever near your destination.

isnt it amazing how your human rights disappear once you get into an airport and you suddenly become slaves or prisoners. This state of affairs continues whilst you are on the airplane and does not end until you manage to escape the airport after going through strict security checks like a supermax prison...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37771117

Yes, all citizen's rights are suspended while at the airport and in the planes. It is crazy. They should be charged with kidnapping.

People have rights. At least, they are supposed to. Show me in the Bill of Rights the footnote that says..., "Rights void at the airport".

7 hours jammed in a plane that has been getting tossed around in weather is like hell. The seats are barely tolerable for the normal flight duration. Real mortal danger from deep vein clots exists and people have a right to get off the plane after sufficient delay.

This is kidnapping or something similar to it. Those passengers should sue that airline Bigtime and Bigly.

Now no pocket knife, and you have to wear a mask! Insanity.

They were NOT hostages. Why do GLPEers insist on dramatizing everything
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76509910

If they took the time to see what the problem was, they would not say the passengers were hostages for 7 hours!

The plane was delayed in Cancun for 5 hours and 4 minutes! They sat inside the airport then boarded. So, it was late leaving the gate in Cancun! Probably because of the weather in NYC!

Flight time was 4 hours 12 minutes. They attempted to land at JFK. When that didn't work out, they diverted to Newark. They were on the ground there for 60 minutes. Then took off and landed at JFK.
