In August 1964, the USS Maddox destroyer was stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of North Vietnam.

On August 2, it was attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats. And then, two days later, on August 4, the Johnson administration claimed that it had been attacked again.

To be clear, the first attack was very real.

The second attack may or may not have actually happened as I have already stated.

The USS Maddox was in international waters collecting Signals intelligence by monitoring NVA radio traffic and was not involved in anything other than that when it was attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats and sank at least two of the attacking torpedo boats in self defense.

That is a historical record recognized by both sides in the incident.
