Re: Can we have just ONE useful SURVIVAL THREAD?
I’ll be bugging in. I live in an area that doesn’t need to be bugged out of. I have stations set up all over town. I know pretty much everyone here and we have coordinated plans for different scenarios.

I have multiple properties all prepped and ready with avenues to get to them that are off road. Power lines and railroad tracks. My brother is a local cop and I know most of them pretty well. You’d be surprised to know how many cops know what is coming. They are prepping as well.

All in all I’m about as ready as anyone can be. If that’s not enough then so be it. I’ve faced death a few times. It’s not the end. Life is just a really good video game.

Bug in when you are already in the right place, but many people are not, many still live and work in big cities, because this is the economic plan for decades now.

The damage to earth caused just by 7bil humans needing to be fed, watered, sewage, waste, clothed, all the vehicles, tech, travel, mining and all arguing about everything they can, causes too much damage. Fact.

500mil living peaceful cooperation, if me and my family are in that number then great and anyone else honest would agree.

I can see there's no way possible for all the religious sects and political and racial divides to be bridged. They will always compete. So someone has to either be under a.i. nano control or just die.

Just logic, emotions removed, that is factual. No I'm not adbocating genocide, just illustrating the cold logic and it's sound.

The population is too much. Even if the Earth could handle it it’s still too much. The problem is people can’t handle it. The majority are too self centered.

Sure we could start hydro gardening to feed everyone. But people aren’t smart enough to even see they are enslaved by a non human race. Realizing that is like graduating from kindergarten.

When you try to open someone’s eyes to this very obvious fact and they go into hysterics denying it, it means humanity is mostly troglodyted. Far more important than anything is is to not be spiritually shallow so that you may have wise discernment. Otherwise that genetic strain should be castrated, not murdered. The balance will reset itself.

I disagree. This planet would be very eerie if there were less people. I've travelled around the world A LOT, and I've RARELY come to a place that is overcrowded - like so much that it's unsustainable.

Actually there are MANY places in the world, where most people welcome MORE people, because population density is not enough to sustain a decent infrastructure. Probably 80% of the world suffers from UNDER-population.

Well-organized megacities are not a problem. Food production is REALLY no problem. Having too many people in SOME places can be a problem - like India. Take 2/3rds of those people and drop them in Russia, Canada, Brazilian rainforests - and you won't even notice there's any problem.

Also if the CO2 -levels would be allowed to increase, the Sahara could be soon habitable again! Think about that.

We could DOUBLE the people on this planet, and it would be fine!

Re: Can we have just ONE useful SURVIVAL THREAD?
Do NOT tell anyone you're prepping - not your family, friends, and especially NOT your neighbors. Also, when the SHTF DO NOT be the one gaining weight while everyone else is losing weight - people will catch on you have a food stash and take that shit from you. Ration your food supply in a SHTF scenerio.

You mentioned your bug out bag being heavy - load light stuff on bottom (tight so it doesn't make any noise when walking) like your tarp or tent, then put heavy stuff at the top where your shoulders/back will support most of the weight - you'll be able to walk farther that way.

Best shtf tip - Be A Gray Man when bugging out.

Buy canned meat (lasts for a couple of years and you can eat it cold as most of it's pre-cooked.) ration it out and remember to NOT be the only one in your neighborhood gaining when when everyone else is losing weight.

SHTF BOB - google and read my book 'SHTF Bug Out Plan' full of info!

If you want to be thin learn to be hungry. Or have some tea with some sugar when the pangs start. Stock up on vitamins and minerals so you won’t have to eat a lot of food to get them. Food will last longer then. Won’t have to have so much food.

Guess what, your neighbors will go door to door in a group and take all of the food from every house. Your preps will be theirs. Fight them and they will just burn your house down.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82965814

Guess what? Not for long ...

Boomstick + 00 Buck will thin the violent herd significantly.

Several bodies displayed prominently out front is a STRONG deterrent.

They will lose fellow herdsters on nearly every incursion.

Best plan is to work together and stop trying to think you will just take what you want.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78701318

how is this about survival????????????????????? the world is way way way way overpopulated.

the world is not overpopulated

you can take every human on earth and give them a house and land all within Texas.

Re: Can we have just ONE useful SURVIVAL THREAD?
ALready be living in the country to the extent practical.

Water is the first need and you will die quickly without it (like within 2 days depending on climate):
- You should have a hand pumped shallow well there, or some other renewable source of water. You can often drive your own sand point well, or water jet a well.
- or Water collection from fiberglass panels or omething. (not tar shingles).

- You should have several ways to purify and disinfect water.
R/O under sink filter is an easy first choice for when you still have pressure water supply. A hand or gravity drain filter otherwise. Around .2 micron is needed to avoid needing to add chlorine or Iodine to disinfect.

- A clear plastic bottle can also purify clear water inside if left in direct strong Sun exposure for an hour or so.

- or have a way to heat water to pasteurization temperature. Boiling is better as you don't need to guess at the temperature.

You should have a tool or water key to get water from urban buildings (outside water bibb).

You should have a stainless steel water bottle of some sort and a steel pot to boil water for disinfection and to make stew. Pot holders, pot hangers, Pot stands, Hay box are also useful.

Fire:
Everyone should have a few butane lighters and a few Ferrocerium rods to start fires. Everyone should have a small metal container for making char cloth. Everyone should know how to make a dry tinder bundle, using whatever is avaiable. If you can find a squirrels nest or bird nest, or some cat tails, or birch bark you are almost there. Everyone should know how to make a friction fire with a hand drill and a bow drill method and know how to make the sets for each. Watch Matt Graham in a few of his appearances on survival shows. Or better yet, change your DNA to become Matt Graham.

Food.
- foraged At least have a book showing edible plants in your area with color photo ID, and whether it can be consumed in a stew, fried up, or a tea made with it.

- Primitive traps everyone should be able to make a figure 4 trap and a few types of bird traps and learn about various baits, visual cue lures, scent lures etc. Learn how to spot game trails and how to build barrier funnels to funnel the prey into the trap.

- Snares These typically require an elastic strap, or a bent sapling to act as the "engine". Watch some videos and practice. Make your own or buy store bought snares. Dave Canterbury has a ton of free videos.

- If you are near salt water, crab traps, crawfish traps etc can get you a lot of good protein.

- Fishing gear. pretty obvious to at least have a bunch of fish hooks, some lures, some pre-tied flies, some BB weights, and a pole if you have the room.

- Store bought traps (bodygrip traps and leg hold traps) Buy a 5 gal bucket full. You also need a trap setter, trap wax, trap dye, small shovel to dig the trap emplacement, etc.

Knife and sharpening stone.
Lots of discussion and not perfect answer. But have a robust knife. There is the Condor Matt graham jungle primitive knife that is as good as anything. Decide whether you also need an Axe or Machete depending on your climate. (machete for warm climates, axe for up north).
I prefer a croc stick to sharpen with, but some people are skilled with other methods. I am not. Croc stick for me.

Tools.
If you are hiking, at least have a good multitool. A Leatherman Rebar or SuperTool 300 or a wave or a Victorinox SPirit-X are 3 options that are all just about optimal.
Barber scissors (don't want to look like a hippie if you come upon civilization. shorter hair is also easier to care for).

Lard.
It doesn't go bad very quickly, and can be used for greasing your frying pan to greasing your tools to prevent rust. You will also be needing calories in your diet at some point.

Cordage.
Something that takes great effort to make in the wild, so you should at least have a good amount of tarred bankline and paracord. a roll of fishing line, some fly leaders would also be handy.

- Military Poncho
Useful not only for a rain cover, put as a small expedient tent.

- Dave Canterberry 10 C's kit
Look it up on Youtube. sail maker's sewing needle, canteen, flashlight, cover, cordage, cutting device, compass, combustion device, Cotton bandana , Cargo tape
[link to www.campingsurvival.com (secure)]

- Insects
The bane of everyone on earth. Carry bug repellent, head net, alcohol or sting aid wipes, stuff for bee stings (Sawyer extractor is a handy device), tool to remove ticks.

- Wilderness first aid kit.
Adventure medical has some well thought out kits to use as a starting point. Add an eyewash cup your favorite splinter removal tools, hewler's loupe magnifier, head lamp, Celox blood clotter, vinegar, alum, isopropyl alcohol, personal meds that you need, tape and bandage materials, Povidone iodine, super glue, a BIG bottle of Benadryl and Naproxen, etc etc.
.

- Home canning equipment and the bible of canning.

- 50 lbs of salt

- 50 lbs of sugar

- 100 lbs of wheat plus a wheat grinder

- 100 lbs of rice

- a bunch of canned food of course if you can manage it. Dried cup of noodles is also easy.

- Spices can promote health and also make food more palatable. Turmeric, cloves, sage, pepper, salt, Adolfe's meat tenderizer (also good for stings).

- a couple of 55 gal drums of potable water, sealed up.

- a gallon of bleach

- 3 gallons of vinegar.

- a gallon of honey

- yeast, baking soda, Cream of tarter

- Coffee and a way to brew it (drip filter cone and filters, French press, whatever. Some cups of course, some sort of mess kit.

- A multifuel cook stove (Coleman Exponent for example).
Spatula, other cooking implements and a scrub pad for cleaning the pans.

- Cleaning towels, personal washcloth, towel to dry off, bottle of detergent soap, razor, toothbrush, mirror.

- ground pads
A pad to sit on, and a pad to lay down on as thermal insulating base and to keep your ass dry.

- wool socks, work gloves, neck gator or Buff, ear muffs.

- firearms
a scoped .22 LR rifle is ideal for most small game and the ammo, is small an relatively cheap. Not ideal for defense though.

an AR 5.56 is pretty optimized for personal defense and some hunting of larger game.

Shotguns are big and heavy and so is their ammo, but if you are at home, would be great for taking birds, and with the heavier ammo be good for close range defense.

A good set of binoculars for scouting. Leupold makes some great options.

- shelter
ideally this is just your house. otherwise figure something else out.

- Hiking stick / club
Tractor supply sells a lifestock sorting cane that can be cut to length and serve as a robust hiking stick. Buy a rubber tip for it and you are good to go.

If you are going to move about with this stuff, or bring heavy resources back home, you need a truck or a heavy duty cart.

ANd you need to be in great physical shape. (can you run a few miles, etc.

And you should make sure your teeth are in good health.

- Bottle of muli Minerals and multi vitamin supplements.
Don't want to get scurvy or pellagra on top of the world ending. Otherwise find some pine needs for VIt C tea, and for niacin, you will be nixtimalizing corn. (got lime? )

- oh yeah, most bugs and worms and slugs are edible. Yum.

If you shoot a deer or something larger, it would be good to know how to clean and harvest the carcass (gambrel and pully hoist). will you be scraping and preserving the hide?
To gut the animals, you should have disposable neoprene gloves ideally to keep from picking up parasites. A Schrade exchange a blade or similar game cleaning kit knife will give you a small saw for cutting through joints and bone, an Ulu knife that is a much easier knife to use and will tire the wrist less.

For fish cleaning of course you need a Rapala Filet knife and maybe a fish scaler, and a cleaning sink board or someplace to do the work with rinse water available.

A strong #2 shovel will have many uses. (burying the dead, gardening, burying gut piles from game, burying excrement, digging water diversion ditches, digging foxholes, digging to emplace traps, carrying stuff around that you don't want to touch, rearranging a camp fire, digging a fire break AKA (isolation belt), clubbing baby seals, etc.

Well, that should get you started.

The kind of STUFF you're looking for.
Because EVERYTHING you noted is good, very good actually...
Because it essentially comes right out of
The Boy Scout Handbook!
Really.

I'll give you one to add:

A) Thermal Imaging Device such as FLIR
Cheapest about $500 or $1200 is good.
Prices can go to the moon!
Night Vision also good...Thermal probably better.
Or...10X50 Binoculars (good in low light!"

YOU"RE WELCOME!?

Re: Can we have just ONE useful SURVIVAL THREAD?
ALready be living in the country to the extent practical.

Water is the first need and you will die quickly without it (like within 2 days depending on climate):

[EDIT]

A strong #2 shovel will have many uses. (burying the dead, gardening, burying gut piles from game, burying excrement, digging water diversion ditches, digging foxholes, digging to emplace traps, carrying stuff around that you don't want to touch, rearranging a camp fire, digging a fire break AKA (isolation belt), clubbing baby seals, etc.

Well, that should get you started.

I was just about to send you a note of appreciation,
But then....you repost with, "You're welcome".

What does that mean?

I just like that song. :)

I was bumping it because there were zero responses.

So thanks for responding. :)

Actually, I am not looking for any survival information.
Just trying to help out the OP who was aksing for a thread on the subject. As the Terminator would say, "I have detailed files".

I also have a sense of humor in case that is not obvious. :)

But to be honest, this thread has been really lacking in what the OP was asking. He said, don't just cut and paste crap. So he gets 5 pages of cut and paste crap. :)

So yeah, You're welcome! Come to think of it. :)

I'm not a complete retard you know, I know more stuff than an average dumbed-down citizen for sure. I wanted to have this thread for SHARING information - it's not just to educate me - it's for all of us.

And I am reading through also that 300-page thread that was linked in the beginning of this thread, lots and lots of great info there.

Having said that, I actually have a question. Has anyone done a calculation or a chart on magnifying glasses, what are the border values for creating a fire? I mean how much sunshine vs diameter of the glass vs magnification of the glass?

The idea would be to find the best compromise between function and mobility. And I don't want to buy 20 different ones to test to find one.
