Re: I picked up a Hobo on the Highway again; he's in my guestroom
Life is so fucking unfair and our society so sick.

He's drug and alcohol free, as in never drank or did drugs.

Never went to prison or even jail.

His father murdered his Mom in front of him then suicided. He was raised in a good foster home, but obviously had developmental and stability issues.

Only bad habit is puffs of cigars. He has mesothelioma from doing demo construction in his youth. He was told he should be ok and live at least another 20 years if he can stop the smoking. Other then that he's functional.

He's wandered place to place for 40 years. Lost all his teeth years ago.

Monday we will try to find out what we can do to get his Birth C and ID back so he can get on disability or SS. He's 62 and has nothing. He can and wants to work, but needs the ID. He may need to be on a med but he seems totally fine without anything.

Thank goodness it's summer so he can be outside. I'm going to see if I can find him a tent on Craigslist, the damm things are so expensive.

He needs to contact his step parents who are still alive and live in Co Springs. If they say he can come home for help to get the ID's , I may drive him there.

Fucking Greyhound wants 200 bucks to go from Nashville to Denver. Insanity.

I'm in no better shape then he is emotionally. Both of us fell through societies cracks. He actually has better resources than I do, money or not.

Buy him the bus ticket, have you checked gas prices lately?
Round trip
2,316 miles divided by even 25 mpg =92.6
92.6 x 4.00= $370.00

3 nights hotel x 150.00 = 450.00
Food = $120.00

Gas $370.00
food $120.00
room $450.00

Total= $940.00

Buy the damned bus ticket.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73137009

I get 30 mpg. Gas in the midwest is 3.40 something. I want to stop in Tulsa on the way back.

I can't remember the last time I paid 150 for a hotel room. It was 115 for a room with tax the other night, but that was unusually expensive. Often it's 50, or 60. I spent the night with him in a hotel the first night, two double beds. We were right next to the office and had the door open it was such a beautiful night. We had a great time.

Try 15 each for dinner at Cracker barrel. I travel with a cooler and usually have turkey, swiss, mayo and rolls and yogurt. I don't eat a lot.

I may want to go anyway to see Garden of the Gods one more time. Plus it's May the absolute perfect month to travel before he kids get out of school. I won't take the freeway the whole way, I've been doing the secondary highways and the difference is amazing.

He has an expired ID from his last residence in NC. 5 years at the last job.

Did 2020 even happen to some of you? Many people lost everything; jobs, homes, friends, everything they own, documents, you name it.

And he's also jabbed BTW. They convinced him to take it in NC at some clinic he was going to for his mesothelioma. He has medicare he just needs new documents.

He's more well than many normal people with jobs who are alcoholics. This guy does no drugs or alcohol. I've been with him three days now. He's very quiet and calm, enjoying getting rested and having a real bed. Watching movies on my DVD.

If you were that good of a person you wouldnt be calling him a hobo. Whats the purpose of even posting this? has nothing to do with anything, people that actually help people dont go around telling everyone they helped someone, especially calling them a name like hobo. Just help him, no need to tell everyone, do cause u want to help not cause u want everyone to know that u helped, cause then ur not doing it to be helpful, ur doing it for praise and acknowledgement from others. I give out 100 a week to homeless people randomly, every week, never have i had to come to a forum to tell everyone.....God see's if ur actually trying to help someone, none of us matter in the end to u anyways, god is the only one u need praise from and he knows if ur helping to help or if ur seeking self gradification!

Re: I picked up a Hobo on the Highway again; he's in my guestroom
A few years ago, I was on my way to the supermarket. It was late, dark, I was on my bicycle. I saw a guy with a backpack walking on the sidewalk.

I passed him by..., and then went back.
"What's your story?", I asked.

(Maybe my just asking him made his day?)

"Are you hungry?" "Come to Publix with me."

And we bought food.

We walked the few blocks back to my house, we shared a meal. He washed his clothes. He used my computer and my phone. He spent the night.

In the morning I saw that he had, in fact, managed to locate a long-lost friend of his. Because her car was in my driveway, and she was in the spare bedroom with him.

"Good Morning!"

We shared another meal.
And then they left.

She called me 8 months later, on Valentine's Day, to thank me.

Be careful. A homeless guy a family was helping turned on them and killed the mom with a machete. He cut her down in front of the house. He went after the dad and chopped him in the back of the head but he lived. He went after the teenage daughter and whacked one of her fingers off when she put her hand up to defend herself. On the way out he got in the family car and drove over the mom to make sure she was dead. Look it up. It happened in Brighton Colorado.

OP, if you go through with a cross country journey to get this fellow back to where he wants to go, then you are a great man. Don't let the naysayers get you down. Sometimes you just have to do what is in your heart and if the idiots cannot figure that out then they need to reevaluate their moral compass.

Hope the ride is a wonderful journey. Don't hit the gas pedal too hard. Slow down and enjoy the scenery God has placed in front of you. Maybe this will help your passenger, too. Don't take all interstate highways. Get off the main roads and take seldom traveled secondary roads. Lots and lots of great scenery to take advantage of.

Good journeys my friend. Keep safe and have a wonder experience.
