Re: Gardening...

Costs a pretty large sum to begin gardening. Anything over 20'x20', you'll wish you had a tiller. Takes a shitload of work and products to turn a lawn or pasture/field into a suitable bed of organic loam to grow decent veges.

Here's the thing: I would bet that with inflation and demand prices for good soil, peat moss, other additives, insects and worms, you can spend a thousand or more. The TIME you'll spend is irreplaceable. Costco sells Organic Tomato products by the case and used to sell Lundberg Farms' Organic Brown Rice.

At this time, so late in the game, BUY everything you can so you have it. A garden attracts animals, pests and thieves. Plus is no guarantee of a harvest. like Fishing is to Catching....

Buying canned foods of all types enables you to transport or even trade. Raw foods, home grown? Who knows if the grower used Miraclegrow? That shit will damage you if you eat anything grown with it.

I've opened a lot of old canned goods. As long as the cans weren't rusted out, they were fine. Did a caciatore with a #10 can of Costco tomato chunks. Can was over 10yrs old. The dinner was great and the can was not in pristine condition.

Time is one thing none of us have a surplus of. Might think about buying indoor grow lights and doing a large tray of Wheatgrass; and doing alfalfa & mung bean sprouts.

Can buy most grains at local feed store. Just be sure they aren't "treated" so they're okay for human & animal consumption.

I would not waste time gardening this Summer. Maybe buy the seeds and gear you'll need. Good idea to begin composting so you can build soil. Maybe plant a cover crop like beneficial clover. Might also think about ways you can save your grey water for a garden, or capture it from your roof (assuming you don't have petroleum shingles).

If you live in a city, you need to figure out how to get water and to dispose of your human waste. An outhouse or a hole works pretty good. You want to have some some lime to enable rapid breakdown of the solids. No outhouse near any wells...

Need to keep your cans, and empty jugs and bottles. They'll be valuable in many ways.

I would not try to rely on a garden, but get what you need for next year, including mason jars & lids plus a big pressure cooker for canning. Get a spare gasket set for the pressure cooker.

To make $$$ go furthest, start haunting the resales & pawnshops. Make your money go as far as you can. So much at thrifts etc is in almost brand new condition. $5 jeans, $1 T-shirts, cheap kitchenware and tools. Worth a look...

This might be ok for one season, but do you really think you can survive on canned good for more than a limited time?

GET THE GARDEN IN.

Re: gardening vs stockpiling

Money VS time; actually your time is what is most valuable.

If we are talking of life after the SHTF event, there is some degree of risk inherent every time you leave your home or go outside of any kind of retreat. Gardening takes a lot of work, a lot of time.

When it comes down to it: Growing vegetables is very protein ineffective. Takes a lot of effort to feed a balanced vegetarian diet. Takes a lot of vitamin supplements, and they best be quality made of organics; not sythesized vitamins.

Brown Rice is the only form of that grain that contains any nutrients. Polished/White Rice is nothing but 100% Starch; NO FOOD Value There!

Brown Rice and most beans combine to make 100% protein.
Soybeans are traditional in China and Japan diet, but for the last 20yrs, most soybeans are GMO; no longer are soybeans a value to your diet. You MIGHT Find some Tofu and other soybean products for Macrobiotic Diet at a high-end health food store; not many other places. GMO derived soy products are no good.

If you are Prepping a food storage, you want The Best food to access in order to keep your health and vitality. Poor diet will make you succeptible to illness and compromise your immune system.

My family has followed the Macrobiotic Diet. It takes money, time, and effort; but enables real healing and superior health. If you eat macrobiotics for a year, it won't be easy to eat the standard fare. More recently, we are eating more Paleo-Keto diet. Have been for several years. Don't usually eat salad, or veges with dinner. Don't eat large servings of meat or seafod. Some whole grain cereals for fiber etc.

You want to be in good health and continue a good diet and vitamin regimen. Pretty easy to store a couple years canned foods. Mostly we have a variety of beans, some meats, green beans and peas, plus sauerkraut and beets.

It's possible to keep lots of frozen food. long storage life really depends on vacuum packing with quality 4mil bags and a quailty packer. Our freezers run at least 4hrs a day. We are off-grid and have battery & inverter generator system. Even a small 4kw genset with inverter and battery can power home and freezers with only a couple hours of runtime every day.

Stored food means you can remain inside and not risk exposure to those with evil intent. Think that one through. Keep your seeds and gardenstock for 2nd year or following year season... Compost your organic trash.

Before TSHTF you might prep your garden area and plant a good nitrogen crop like clover. Earthworms can be grown indoors in tote bins. Good time to grow sprouts for salads and keep a tray of wheatgrass for juicing. Wheatgrass is packed with nutrients. Might try keeping a kiddie pool of catfish in your garage. A small pool setup is cheap and gives you a water reserve. Who don't like catfish? Might also be able to farm shrimp?

I think being able to stay out of the line of fire during SHTF is vital to longterm survival.

We also did a fishtank with hydroponics one Summer. Not feasible with a small tank, but it did work. I know several people who keep chickens in their basement, and even goats in Winter months can be kept indoors. We did rabbits for a year before deciding they weren't worth the effort & money. Rabbits make a lot of good manure for your garden though.

What really matters is protein.

Protein shakes are a top value for storage.

I dont eat processed, high salt canned foods on a daily basis. So rotating them is not an option. I was thinking about buying a pressure cooker and start canning whole foods. Any other ideas? I try to stay away from the dehydrated foods in a bag/box too. Questionable shelf life and nutrition. I have enough space for 2 to 4 flower beds. What should i grow? Bare minimum essentials? gold and solver too for barter? Thoughts?

Buy a harvest right freeze dryer for $4,000

Then buy $1,000 worth of Coscto Lasagna and freeze dry it.

That's what I would do anyways....

On the right track...you can pick up a harvest right freeze dryer for 3K or little less. 24-30 hours and you have shelf stable, room temp food storage that will last 20+ YEARS.

I wouldn't bother growing, just buy stuff in season and freeze dry it. On sale, you can get stuff dirt cheap. Aldis was selling a dozen eggs for $1 each (since went up to $2.50/doz...still cheap). I can get 12 dozen eggs in one run. Go in raw and come out tasting like scrambled. Since I eat 6 eggs a day, that is almost a months worth of food along with a little rice.

Seriously, getting a food freeze dryer is the way to go

Get yourself vac seal bags and a good vac seal machine.
Stock up on bulk rice, beans, dried potato and pastas and vac seal them.
Place in freezer for 24 hours to kill any critters.
Get yourself a grain grinder and order winter wheat or etc raw. Do the same thing.
You can buy lots of bulk items in Amazon like evoo and etc etc which will last a couple years. Get the large square cans. Get yourself a dehydrator and dehydrate veggies and fruits and etc. Vac seal and store.
Get Ball jars, cases of them. Wait for specials on things and cook jar and seal.

Have water storage if you are in drier states.

Because you are the only one with a good supply of lead. Yeah, right.

The earlier poster was correct. Get your garden going. You can compost the asses who come to steal what you've worked for. Bury them deep and plant a fruit tree.

I did some experimentation during the covid restrictions.....I have a empty 2nd floor in my 2 family house that I turned into a indoor farm......I sprouted, grew micro greens, and some vegetables in pots.....

between last summer and now, I spent 10K for freeze dried meats.....I also have near a 1/2 ton of white rice.....

My recent order was for 6 cases of Yoder's canned meats....

Re: I have $5,000 right now for long term survival food. What do i get???
I'd invest in those buckets of food that last for years and years and years.

Good to garden and can as long as you can, but you can't depend on good weather. Even if you did have a garden, how are you gonna prevent the starving masses from raiding that garden? What about hail, floods, drought?

Freezing what you can is good too. What happens though when the power goes out? If it's only temporary, well, that might work out for awhile, but what if it goes out and doesn't come back on?

So, I'd invest in those buckets of food just to be on the safe side. You can't depend on having power to run those freezers and you can't depend on the weather cooperating long enough for you to get a good crop.

Canning foods while you can is good too, but those don't last forever either.

What if the food shortages last for 7 years or more? What if there's a nuclear winter or many volcanoes erupting to where the sunlight is blocked so nothing will grow?

So I'd play it safe and get those buckets of food, enough to last at least 7 years. I know they're expensive, but you say you have $5,000 to blow!

There's a verse in the Bible where it describes people throwing their silver and gold out into the streets.

Ezekiel 7:19 They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing. Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. For it was the stumbling block of their iniquity.

Why can't their silver and gold just buy food for them to eat so they don't go hungry? No food to buy? No crops growing? No pastures for livestock?

So I'd purchase enough to get you through for at least 7 years. If you're able to grow food and raise livestock to where you don't need it, you could always give it to others who are less fortunate than you.

Buy Oatmeal, cheap and can easily be stored for years (Youtube). Oatmeal requires little preparation (to eat) and can bulk up stews and soups. It contains minerals and vitamins, plenty of energy and is filling and satisfies hunger for a decent time.

Also buy a vacuum sealing machine and a decent quantity of film. Can be used to protect more than just food. Start watching Youtube for tips and tricks regarding preservation and storage of food like rodent / pest proof containers and best plastic films to use, especially seed preservation.

Grow potatoes. Stockpile meat, white rice, oatmeal and raisins. You said you would not eat canned foods. Buy beans anyway and also peanut butter.
