We have tons of them in Melbourne where I live, it’s the second biggest Greek population outside of Athens whilst the Italians went across the country. They settled in outer suburbs and built homes. Their kids learned English and practiced their European culture at home whilst accepting Aussie culture, particularly getting involved in AFL and soccer. We’re on third and fourth generations now and they have a strong cultural representation whilst embracing their part in the broader Aussie culture. The local newsagents all sell a Greek newspaper. We have excellent Greek and Italian food both in the city and in the suburbs they dominate. Orthodox Easter is common, and most of us know some slang. They came here with nothing and yes they, like every other immigrant group faced some resistance, but they made great lives for themselves and subsequent generations. But they did it by being themselves and learning to get along with the rest of us. By joining in our culture. By interacting in our local economy. By joining social and sporting clubs. The Chinese in Australia do none of that. They are like a social enclave. They have their own companies providing services just to Chinese. Their own sporting clubs or where they do join local clubs (like golf) they just segregate themselves. They even have their own UberEats. Something like 1.2M live amongst the 26M Aussies. But pre Covid we had 700k Chinese students annually too, that number is well down now but they are a large wealthy cohort living here essentially as foreigners. /u/LetThemDriveTeslas 172 points 14 hours ago There’s a shit ton of Chinese in Australia and we don’t really get to see how many of them are still full blown CCP supporters because we’re only supposed to care about all the money they pour in to our real estate markets. Think you’ll see a lot more of this in the coming years. These people are fundamentally incompatible with our society - not like other groups which have sought refuge and integrated in to Aussie society, the Chinese seem determined to run a parallel society where they merely occupy parts of the country and don’t interact with the rest. |
