Anonymous Coward User ID: 77896303 United States 05/08/2022 09:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Lottery watchdog accused as cop in home invasion In September 1984, Miami-Dade police were assigned a strange case: An officer in his police car stood watch while three armed men burst into a woman’s home. The men forced her, her teenage daughter and her infant son to the ground at gunpoint, then searched the place for money and drugs. Detectives had little to go on, but found the officer they believed had stood watch. They fired him for being a “participant in a home invasion robbery.” That officer is now the inspector general for the Florida Lottery. Since 2006, Andy Mompeller has been the lottery’s top watchdog, responsible for holding the $5 billion state agency accountable and uncovering fraud, waste and abuse. Because they investigate and call out wrongdoing, inspectors general are held to the highest ethical standards. An investigation revealed last month that for years lottery officials, including Mompeller, 55, have missed potential fraud among its winners. The investigation found some lottery winners might be winning too often, against astronomical odds. [link to www.palmbeachpost.com (secure)] |

In our little town, it was either the mayor, or a councilwoman, can't remember which, but she worked at a bar. She would open all the pull tabs and keep a winner or two, then she would glue them back together. Who knows how long she got away with it before someone noticed that the tickets were glued back. That was about the same time an insurance agent, and big churchgoer, got caught running a prostitution ring in town. Before that, my neighbor got caught embezzling over a hundred grand from her employer. This is just a small town too. |

I would only get a couple tickets at a time, but would usually get at least a free ticket. I used to win small amounts, but no more. You may be on to something. Anonymous Coward User ID: 34855329 United States 05/08/2022 09:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I’ve seen the same in PA. However, I’ve had my own theory. They are pushing hard state lotto arcade/slot machines right now. Pizza places, grocery stores, and all kinds of other places have them now and they are bringing in huge money both from the businesses and the players. A bunch of bars and restaurants have these weird virtual horse and car races too that are linked to the state lotto as well. We buy scratch offs for birthdays and other things all the time and no one hits anymore. I think the decrease in the scratch offs is to drive more people virtual. They can then phase out the physical scratch offs and go fully virtual (all profit) and no one will complain because they were weaned off of them and won’t care. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 83144421 United States 05/08/2022 09:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Some folks get addicted to gambling like the one lady in my area years ago who had embezzled over $200,000 from her employer and spent every last penny on it on playing the lottery and didn't win a thing. If that were me (but it wouldn't be as I am not a thief) I would have some hard goods and property to show for it rather than blowing it all away on a pipe dream! Might as well have set the money on fire! |

Literal fucking versus virtual fucking.... You still lose your money. Right, but it isn’t about us or how we’re fucked, one doesn’t require physical goods to be produced, shipped, inventoried, etc. it makes the fucking way more profitable and simple. They can change the odds or manipulate virtual however and how often they want within the law, physical tickets are set odds (which are still pushed to the minimum). Eliminating physical is the real plan IMO, but doing that when people are winning is guaranteed outrage... doing it when everyone is losing or have stopped playing is easy. |
