That is how they would lay you off; the orders would just stop coming at all. You wouldn't get an email or notice.

Carvana was paying more for vehicles then any of the dealerships around me. That’ll give them the inventory they needed but now the used car market levels off or even retracts with the economy they could be in trouble.

Everyone buying a used car at ANY cost, should get an independent inspection.

If the inspection proves that the car has been misrepresented, by the used car dealership (who state that the car is in good condition and not been in a wreck) then sue the dealer for the cost of the inspection.

A 30 day money back guaranty is plenty of time to get an inspection done (even though it is foolish to part with the money first). All that is needed is the original receipt from the used car dealer with a written statement that the car is in good condition for it's age and that there is absolutely no signs or wreck repairs or repainting etc.

Anyone buying a 10 or 12+ year old car with extraordinary low or high mileage, expecting it to be reliable and low maintenance is a fool. If a used car dealer refuses to commit his PROFESSIONAL opinion on the condition in writing - walk away.

Anyone working in the motor trade know all the signs of a problematic / dubious car, right down to $40 ultrasonic paint depth / bondo detector. Every modern car has details of weak points that need to be looked for. There is no reason why anyone should get stiffed by a used car dealer, unless they go bust or do a runner.

Do a little homework on the make and model of the desired car, if it turns out your dream car are known to be a dog and a money pit, decide on another manufacture / model.

30 day money back return policy, if true is generous. The used car dealership is still liable if they have sold a car that is faulty, even second hand. You may have to argue your case though, depending on time to failure.

I recently sold them two nice vehicles. They overpaid in my opinion, but the selling process was flawless and simple. I loved the concept.

How it was in the not so old days:

Payday payment used cars financed by the dealer.

Knew someone in that old school business.

Once the buyer made the down payment (about the same amount as a regular payment) and three more payments the dealer has their costs covered. All profit from there.

So if the customer defaulted at least the dealer got his money out.

Dealer just called on contract recovery companies (often a good friend or acquaintance) to get the few vehicles that defaulted.

If the car came back in half good shape, rinse, repeat.

You’re an idiot if you think getting an inspection AFTER buying it protects you. All they have to do is say, car wasn’t that way when we sold it. Prove you didn’t beat on it and smoke the engine in the first week. You will lose that case 100% of the time.

Its actually a very neat gimmick if you ask me... it solves several problems with one solution.

A vertical parking lot (Less land space)

Organizes the cars so you can get the individual car down that you want.

Keeps the cars protected from the weather (Hail) and vandals (Security)

the tower is also a giant billboard for their company name displaying their name far and wide.

and then of course the gimmick "WOW" factor of the automated vending tower which has become their trademark.

Their business model is atrocious. There may be other factors at play, but they contributed to in their own demise. In Texas Carvana is in big trouble for issuing multiple paper tags because they were either unable or too lazy to acquire legitimate license plates for the cars they sold. Lots and lots of unhappy customers here.

This wasn't the best business model to start with. Buying a used car relying on pictures and no test drive. My nephew sells used cars at a large dealership in a college town in the midwest. He sold 17 last month, in person to person deals. People are buying cars, just not the "new" way like ordering a pizza to your door.

No I sold them two nice low mileage vehicles in very nice condition. They overpaid, I never left the house, my only interaction with a real person was when the drivers picked up the cars. What's not to like?
