You must not have met many decent Christians.

I assure you there are some decent ones. And some that are amazingly kind and loving. And do help alleviate the suffering that others experience.

I live in the "Bible Belt". I gave 40 years of experience, participation, education and observation before making my final decision.

I've met exactly two authentic Christians out of many hundreds, inclusive of family and friends, who actually walk the talk, and I further found that the followers of the false Christian religion and the Church of Man actually do the greatest damage to others mostly by using Christ's cloak to hide their evil.

The Christian religion and all its denominations and "doctrines" (I'm certain Jesus is rolling his eyes at that) is an adult in-crowd, a tr*be where members can feel and look superior and gain false credibility for pretending to be "good".

In short: Inauthentic. Fake. Hypocrites. And, in many cases, outright dangerous.

"But, but, but...they aren't all like that" you say? Those who, with a blind eye, closed mouths and no action, stand next to the majority who do demonstrate that character, are complicit enablers who help define your group.

I'm with Ghandi: "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

And, the only reason I will ever walk into another church is to attend a memorial service of a loved one to honor and give respect for the life led and contributions made.

First: OP, I am so sorry if this thread becomes hijacked due to my answer. That was not my intent.

Second: My experiences are almost identical to TXP's, except I know a few more "authentic" Christians who actually do try to practice what they preach. That being said, they are still in the minority.

My wife is one of those authentic Christians. Her church refused to marry us and kicked her out, and her family almost disowned her for marrying me, although they eventually admitted they were wrong for that and now maintain normal relationships with us. However, I find it strange that out of the three marriages between her siblings, ours is the only one still standing even though the other two were "blessed" by and conducted in the church. Both of those marriages ended primarily because of infidelity, although there were other underlying reasons.

To be clear, I have no problem with the Christian religion as taught by Christ in the New Testament. I have a huge problem with the Christian religion as it is generally practiced in America, as it bears little resemblance to Christ's teachings.
