Your friend is on the opposite side of the building and looks up at the ceiling and describes it to you. Then you look up at the ceiling, on the other side of the building, and describe what you see on the building. Do you honestly think you and your friend are going to be looking at the same features on the ceiling? Would you be able to see the features he's looking at without walking over to where he is? He knew that water 'found it's own level' so a canal was a useful measure of gradient(-less-ness) and distance. As the first human to use triangulation to measure this, his accuracy was astounding considering that, at the time, no-one knew the Earth was an oblate sphere and a geoid to boot. The luck bit? He measured at one of the 'best' meridians for determining the 'size' of 1 degree of Latitude. Not perfect, but with a 0.44% error. Mostly explained by his distance from the exact half-way point between a Pole and the Equator. Not one at 45 degrees up, or down, but the one that actually bisects the oblate sphere. @45.08 degrees. As an aside- the Romans knew of this effect. Because of the value of salt, with which they paid Centurions for their days march, they needed exact measurements because they deduced that the Latitudes varied in 'height' as you went 'up ' or 'down' the world. They achieved this by altering the circumference of their pedometers according to the latitude in which they would be used. You don't get to rule the civilized world by being stupid. Neolithic man knew the Earth was round. Those megaliths didn't plant and align themselves. Each 'ancient' civilization had their own, unique offset to accommodate the spherical world they knew they existed upon. secretacademy.com Do as thou wilt is a very dangerous pastime |

None of the conspiracies make sense until you figure out the globe Earth LIE. The phrase is in commas for that very reason. Water finds it's own level on the planet. It seems 'flatter' when constrained in a canal. Not so much at sea. There are rather large differences (attributed to undersea elemental densities varying - granite, silica, oil-bearing, porous rock etc) between the height above 'sea level' in the waters off Iceland and those off the West coast of India. A hundred meters (ish) offset - not insignificant variations (hence 'the Geoid') Do as thou wilt is a very dangerous pastime |
