WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A suspect who was driving a van in the wrong direction and crashed onto the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts campus in downtown West Palm Beach was shot and killed by police Friday after an altercation, a police spokesman said.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Police shot and killed a "violent erratic suspect" who crashed a van through the locked gate of Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach on Friday.

The incident started around 12 p.m. when police said they received calls about a vehicle driving erratically along Banyan Boulevard. Someone in a van was going the wrong direction and eventually ended up smashing through the gate of the campus.

The erratic driver took out a palm tree and just missed a maintenance worker in a golf cart.

School District Police officers and officers with the West Palm Beach Police Department responded to the scene.

Police said the suspect ran into Building 7, the school auditorium where a struggle with the suspect, officers, and school staff ensued. A West Palm Beach Police officer shot and killed the suspect. The suspect has not been identified.
