No real proof, but two points.
1- if Russia did get him why waste the immediate propaganda? It could help their cause to out this.
2. Why would a us general have not bugged out long before it became impossible to do so?

As to your second point everyone was saying Ukraine was winning in Mariupol up until the moment they were defeated maybe they believed it. Alternatively maybe they were held hostage knowing that US would make every attempt to free them and Russia would be hesitant to just flatten the place with bunker busters.
