Rough growth rate of Monkeypox confirmed cases appears to be 60% per day (1.6X per day).

This is a first plot. Case identification likely increases from awareness of need to report them. Confirmation may be delayed for some cases, affecting the shape of increase.

As of now Monkeypox cases are

• 27X in one week

If this growth rate continues the 228 now confirmed will be more than
6,000 in one week

It’s not just the #monkeypox virus, but awareness of it that is spreading in the past days. This may lead to more and more people coming forward.

The global 7day-average has recently gone below the exponential line. However, the growth in the UK looks quite exponential so far.

We are at day 23 since the first 7 cases were announced. With the doubling theory even at 1.5 days we should be well over a million cases by now.

Because of the long incubation phase doesn’t it change things re projection ?

If the guy on 7th may infected people a few days before (say the 5th), then it could take upto 21 days to show - 26th May. As time goes by you would lose the step up in cases but initially you would see big jumps with gaps inbetween!

Is that right?

That could be a possibility since no one seems to be seeking medical aid until the blisters appear.

I would also assume there are infected people out there, that are not going to the Dr. because they heard its mild and will 'Heal" itself in around three weeks.

Good morning to some, afternoon to others.

The house I was born into had a built in library replete with the cliché bookcase that opened up into a hidden room (yes really).

As a result, I've developed a bit of an unhealthy fascination with books- every time I move I'm accompanied by several tractor trailers to bring my collection along.

I've always liked books- the physical thing. They guard against the ease of shifting truths in the electronic age where facts can be changed, altered and erased with the click of a mouse much like the animals repainting the words on the barn in Animal Farm.

Anyway, I went over to my section of surgical books for you this morning. This particular tome was printed before monkeypox was identified, but it has very good details on the other viruses in the orthopox group. While it might be a bit outdated, so are our first hand encounters with these diseases and the wisdom gained through trial and error dealing with these things shouldn't be discounted or lost.

I believe we are just in the beginning stages of a somewhat unusual outbreak. It may become necessary to differentiate between other similar viruses for several reasons.

Monkeypox shares a great bit of similarity with smallpox, the main difference being severity, so here's what we have for smallpox:

Smallpox

Illness can be spread through contact with the infected dead.

Illness can also be passed from mother to unborn child in utero.

12-14 days to incubate and develop disease once infected.

During this phase, it is very difficult to diagnose. The symptoms are indefinite and mimic those of the flu.

Initial symptoms are:
Chills
Intense headache
Excruciating pain in the back and limbs
Vomiting
Fever
Loss of appetite
Convulsions at times

Once a rash develops, the patient feels well and considers themselves recovered and spreads the disease to others.

The rash then develops postules which erupt, causing an onset of a fever of 104-105 degrees.

The greatest danger of death is during this period and pulse becomes rapid and feeble.

Erupted postules may become infected and abscessed.

There are different forms of smallpox infection:

Discrete

Confluent

Hemorrhagic- most dangerous form. Postules are blood filled instead of clear liquid.

Varioloid- modified by vaccine. Mild symptoms, fast progression with no secondary fever in the postule phase.

Complications may arise such as kidney damage, pneumonia, laryngitis, conjunctivitis, blindness and gangrene.

Death rate in the unvaccinated is 25-30%

5 week quarantine is necessary.

Exposure to light in the red spectrum only helps reduce the eruption of postules.

Scarring is reduced by applying ichthyol to the postules.

Due to past use of human material to develop vaccines, syphilis infection was introduced (food for thought).

Differentiating from Chickenpox

Rash primarily affects back and legs only.
No secondary fever during rash phase.
Pricking with a pin causes postules to collapse whereas with smallpox it does not.

In Closing

Do not discount what is going on here.

Genome mapping has pointed to this being similar to the 2018 strain, but something is clearly different.

Simultaneous outbreak epicenters, many with no travel history.

The numbers point to the early, slow stages of exponential growth.

Maybe it is mild? Maybe not enough time has passed to know for sure?

Maybe it was caused by the unprecedented meddling of the COVID pandemic.

Maybe it is a new form of STD that will be with us for a while? If so, it will affect all sexual orientations eventually.

Maybe it is something more nefarious.

Less than 10 people on this planet know for sure what is going on and none of us are one of them.

All I know for certain at this point is the talking points now are exactly the same as they were for COVID: It only affects X type of people, it's cause for low concern, it can be controlled. We all know how that turned out.

We are dealing with imbeciles in charge at best, and known liars at worst.
