Govt says Ebola has not reached Kampala, despite cases!!

Health authorities on Thursday said the man's wife also tested positive for Ebola shortly after giving birth at a health clinic in Kampala, a city of 1.5 million people.

But despite this new case, Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng stressed that Kampala was still considered Ebola-free because the woman, and her husband, were exposed to the virus in Mubende.

"I want to state very clearly that this does not mean Kampala has Ebola," Aceng told reporters on Thursday.

"Cases that were already listed in Mubende remain cases of Mubende. Unless Kampala generates its own cases that start within Kampala, we cannot call that a Kampala case."

Reading through the article, couple things caught my eye

The woman and her husband were exposed in Mubende, the article stated "cases that were already listed in Mubende remain cases of Mubende"

These folks are currently in Kampala - but, the officials state

'Unless Kampala generates its own cases that start within Kampala, we cannot call that a Kampala case'

That's what is wrong with the world at the moment. Obviously there ARE cases in Kampala because THATS where the woman and her husband are

So, why do OFFICIALS alway play it down and divert the truth ?

Or am I reading it wrong?

They are messing with words aren’t they. They say they caught it in the village and got diagnosed in Kampala - so the cases are in Kampala !

it is more of a clarification to stop ppl from panic. for now, they are correct, IF they did contact tracing and made sure this cpl did not infect anyone in the main city. that can b a big "IF".

we have seen this happen with other diseases. ppl catch things while traveling and return home, but don't spread them in their home countries. for instance, tomato flu was caught and the family returned i believe to the UK. but we don't have an outbreak of it in the UK.

it is concerning but not alarming. we should keep an eye on it but not freak, for lack of better words. as long as they contact traced and isolated anyone these ppl came in contact with, it can b contained. it is AFRICA and they have stopped several outbreaks from becoming full blown pandemics before. there is hope.

my confidence in health depts of several countries isn't very high. they have shown incompetance dealing with covid for almost 3 years. contact tracing in the US is always weeks behind any outbreak. took our leaders months to figure out who they needed to isolate even. they weren't smart enuf to isolate entire families. they allowed ppl from infected households to spread covid. and even now, almost 3 yrs into the pandemic, our HCW's are using inferior masks.

I have no doubt covid met up with ebola and now its airborne and/or has a longer incubation period.

I am an infectious disease specialist in Chicago. There was an email this week about a meeting on Monday. The city is making sure everyone knows our plan. Two people, on the seventh and on 13 October were put into isolation in Chicago under investigation from Uganda flights
