If you've bought a home in the past 30 years, what did you pay for it?

My parents bought a home 30 years ago for 15k in a nice suburban neighborhood, needed a coat of paint but nothing major.

That house is now worth 300k and the neighborhood has gone to shit.

Wages have barely risen.

Sure, it's still the suburbs but now they have to lock their doors... for reasons.

Anyways, no wonder 30-40 somethings don't own homes.

A lot less than I would have to pay now.

I did see an article recently about how younger people now are not going for anything large - the smaller and more eco friendly the better. Plus, they are absolutely ok living on top of each other.
Not sure they are looking for the same thing.

Sounds like WEF talking points...

You will own nothing and be happy.

They won't be too happy once they're older and wish they had something better.
Probably is just more propaganda research anyway.

I paid $50,000 for my house 10 years ago. They say it's worth $150,000 now, but I like my home and couldn't afford a higher house payment if I wanted to leave.

Re: If you've bought a home in the past 30 years, what did you pay for it?
I bought a house during the Clinton years. After I bought it property values dropped. I was embarrassed to tell anyone what I paid for it. I was not under water because I got a decent loan and made enough. It was an abandoned home on the California Coast. 30 years ago it was 233k. It was a mess. I cleaned it up enough to live in it. In 2005 when money was cheap I took a loan out and remodeled. The whole house. New plumbing. New electrical. New everything. Updated and approved. I don't know what it is worth today but I am not leaving. Almost paid off. It is a small home. Everyone and my mother, brother, siblings, nieces, nephews, and our own children have lived in this house. It was crowded but we survived. For a long time we only had one bathroom. The sad thing is everybody , native Californians, relatives, people I have known forever have left. Chinese are here now. Buying up everything. They want my house and bother me every day.

Re: If you've bought a home in the past 30 years, what did you pay for it?
Have always made a profit from selling our houses (in many states) the one that haunts me the most is the Cali house, sold it just before the market went nuts (20 yrs ago) could have made half a million more if we'd have waited 1 year.

I sold our house in MO and paid cash for what I'm in now, but I was willing to put in the sweat equity to make it what I want it to be. A lot of young people aren't willing to do that, they want perfect up front....never gonna happen

No, I got your point, just reminded me of an article/newscast I just saw.
Know exactly. My business is commercial real estate. Am selling now for $20-$30+ SF for something I bought for $2 SF (and some is just two years ago).

Bought a home in 1976 for $27,500 in a very affluent, 1% area.

Sold it in 2020 for $460,000.00 and could have made more except I'm not greedy. That was the 2nd bid, the 3rd was for $475,000.000 but it was a lesbian couple that wouldn't have fit in on our street.

Bought a brand new home, new appliances, private court dead end, for $289,000.00.

No bills, pension, bought a new car. Life it good!

Never bought a house, but I use to buy properties instead.
I used to by a lot build a house, live in it for a year while building, then sell it for a profit, doing it this way allows you to write off all taxes and permits and gives you a place to live free for a year.

I have not done that in a decade now, 10 years ago I bought 4800 hectares for $35 an acre. And now I live off grid.

95’ paid 45k for a 900 sf home OKC.
99’ sold for 54k. ( worth 145k now )
99’ paid 174k for a 2700 sf home Okc.
03’ sold for 194k. ( worth 315k now )
03’ paid 427k for a 2700 sf home Seattle.
11’ sold for 600k. ( worth 2.5 million now )
11’ paid 725k for a 5700 sf Dallas.
22’ sold 1.3 million.
All I did was learn everything about home inspections and mortgages. The rest took care of itself. Never used any of my own money just in case I needed to walk away. Yes. There’s ways of using 100% someone else’s money. And you should. Use yours as investment vehicle.

Because of the equity and I’m completely cashed out, I walked away with over 800k of someone else’s money. Spent it all to build my dream property. Should’ve kept that Seattle home.
