If you've bought a home in the past 30 years, what did you pay for it?

Re: If you've bought a home in the past 30 years, what did you pay for it?
My house is now valued at TWICE the amount we paid for it. If we sold our house, we would definitely make a profit - but where would we move? Maybe down south/west where homes are more affordable. We've been investing in chicken coops, gardens, generators, preserving food, etc. The problem for us is property tax keeps going up.

What you do is MOVE into the center of the USA somewhere. A small town, and buy a cheap house there. Because things are about to get DICEY in big cities and on the coasts.

Bought a house two years ago for what I believed to be a “good price” all things considered (but still too much for what it was). It’s worth close to double what I paid for it then today.
Within the surreal depths of "reality" lies the truth.

130k for a family built brick ranch with full basement on 3 acers. We plan on passing the house down to my son. It may be the only way he can get a home by the time it comes for him to marry. Who knows?
He may get a break and get a opportunity come his way if he works hard.

I dunno.
The future looks bleak.

I will reply to this question (no offense to OP) with the same reply I gave to the exceptionally invasive 2010 Federal Census that went way too far beyond "# of people in your house" and about 20 more pages of shit. I wrote NUNYA. As in "It's NUNYA damn business."

I bought my house last year in February. I repaired and upgraded it inside and out. It is now worth more than double what I paid for it. I am not budging, seeing I got the house that is now just perfect for me.

Re: If you've bought a home in the past 30 years, what did you pay for it?
I bought a house during the Clinton years. After I bought it property values dropped. I was embarrassed to tell anyone what I paid for it. I was not under water because I got a decent loan and made enough. It was an abandoned home on the California Coast. 30 years ago it was 233k. It was a mess. I cleaned it up enough to live in it. In 2005 when money was cheap I took a loan out and remodeled. The whole house. New plumbing. New electrical. New everything. Updated and approved. I don't know what it is worth today but I am not leaving. Almost paid off. It is a small home. Everyone and my mother, brother, siblings, nieces, nephews, and our own children have lived in this house. It was crowded but we survived. For a long time we only had one bathroom. The sad thing is everybody , native Californians, relatives, people I have known forever have left. Chinese are here now. Buying up everything. They want my house and bother me every day.

Re: If you've bought a home in the past 30 years, what did you pay for it?
35 years old

Bought first house when I was 24 in 2012 for $222,000 was a raised ranch on a pond, thought it was going to be my forever house put a lot of work into it. Ended up selling after a long term relationship ended

Bought second house in in a beach neighborhood about a mile from the ocean $400,000 a nice colonial all updated bike riding distance to the beaches. Ended up selling when we had our first kid and because I really wanted more land/privacy

Bought third house 11 acres along the salt ponds/ocean for $980,000 and have spent countless hours working on the land and home building a farm.

Don’t think I’ll ever move from here but I’ve said that before

New homes were going for 15,000 60 years ago. 30 years ago 14 grand might get you a shack--unless there was some special circumstances.

Anyway, just over 3 years ago I bought my current home, very nice area, 1900 sq feet ranch style, for 210 thousand. However, it was a short sale. It is currently worth about 400,000 thousand and going up fast. I will sell and move even further from any big city. I'm planning on paying cash the next time.

Sounds like WEF talking points...

You will own nothing and be happy.

I did see an article recently about how younger people now are not going for anything large - the smaller and more eco friendly the better. Plus, they are absolutely ok living on top of each other.
Not sure they are looking for the same thing.

My parents bought a home 30 years ago for 15k in a nice suburban neighborhood, needed a coat of paint but nothing major.

That house is now worth 300k and the neighborhood has gone to shit.

Wages have barely risen.

Sure, it's still the suburbs but now they have to lock their doors... for reasons.

Anyways, no wonder 30-40 somethings don't own homes.
