Here's the St. Thomas Aquinas approach.
Everything we see in nature has a cause. We ask about everything, where did it come from , what made it, etc. Everything we know has to have a cause. But at some point in the chain, there has to be something that doesn't have a cause.
This notion that matter and the universe somehow created themselves out of nothing is utterly ludicrous, and the only people who believe that despite the notion of God. They don't really believe if because it defies reason, but they choose to believe it because they hate God.
