Nothing.

The investments we still hold are real estate, and moved from stocks into commodities in January. Otherwise, sitting on a cash stack to buy in when we think the market has bottomed.

It's hard to figure, honestly.

I've lost money in one managed account, but I made money in another that I manage myself. The one I manage myself was small cap stocks for smaller pharmaceutical companies that I would buy and sell as the news cycle moved.

All together, I think I'm down 15% or maybe as much as 20%.

Don't be a coward (ac irony). I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

Most people are down anywhere from 10% to 40% in investments, depending on how they invest. Anyone man or woman enough to admit it?

You haven’t lost anything unless you sell while it’s down. Just hold onto it, invest more if you can, it’s like when a store has a sale right now. Hold tight and it will come back up, it always has and always will. If you are invested for any length of time you know the drill, you’ve see this happen before and it will happen again, it’s the nature of how it goes.

This is a stupid mentality that gets most people burnt.

You definitely lost it even when you are holding because it’s simply not there anymore. And when you lost it it’s no longer liquid or contributing to your net worth.

All these people saying you don't lose till you sell. I know lots of people that lost about 40% after 911. It took a very long time to recover from that. If you were near retirement age, you got screwed big.

The QE's are ending, that is, liquidity, and the market is like the reservoir where this liquidity flows into. With this, stock prices become inflated, as the money has to be parked somewhere.

When earnings come in and are disappointing, value dissipates, the price of the stock goes down if there is not excess liquidity keeping it artificially afloat. This is the stage we are entering. Earnings and real estate will get slammed by inflation. I think we have another 20-30% more to go and it could even be worse.

You should be putting money into your 401k every paycheck. That way you catch the ups and downs and on average you will have a 10-12% gain annually over time. You will occasionally have a year when you are down but you will also have years when you are up substantially. The rate of return is amazingly consistent at about 12% over any ten year period.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76849472

Yet inflation on average is 2-3% every year. This year 8%+ !

How's that 12% over 10 years looking now?

Only people that loose say you haven’t lost anything until you sell.

But the fact is your wealth is dependent on LIQUID ASSETS. I’d you can’t withdraw it today to cash it doesn’t count. So yes you can count your 401K, IRA, crypto as wealth today if you can liquidate it immediately. But if you lost 50% you can NO LONGER LIQUIDATE what you LOST only what you HAVE.

Is that a little more clear… yes you lost not only money you hade but missed potential growth…

Year to year I'm down 8.4%. So I've retained 91% of my investment worth. However,I don't make or lose anythig until I sell. Its down y to y but up 83% over the last 10 years. So overall its way up if I sold all of it but worth less than it was in January 2022. The current trend to Bitcoin shows a 52% decline y to y. Again , you can lock in your losses by selling. There's nothing to admit, its simple math. You could say its a great time to buy with prices lower or not. Investing is not gambling but you can treat it like it is, then you're gambling not investing. Odd, some folks don't know the difference.

I was fortunate enough to buy one of those $4.00 stocks that flew to the moon. It went up to $102.00 my portfolio was $2,300,000.00 today its down to $650,000.00 I am still way up the stock is at $26.00 and floundering. Really tough to watch and to decide what to do. If I sell taxes will eat up so much of my sale, If I hold how much lower will it go? If I hang on how many years before it climbs up. All this rests on Biden's fake presidency and Obama's plans.
