Drivers in NYC are starting to pump and glide their cars because of high gas prices!! every time time you switch off that engine and start it again it spends a few minutes running with extra fuel input. resulting in using more fuel that you would have saved running the engine in idle. |

If you have a stick pump and glide under good conditions can seriously improve range. Your theory means that every time auto start stop activates gas is wasted. It is not. |

Coasting or pump and gliding Quoting: Anonymous Coward 66527243 An alternative to acceleration or braking is coasting, i.e. gliding along without propulsion. Basically these people are forced to pump and glide their cars because gas is so expensive, and is all SUVs! I drive by them smiling in my hybrid, if gas was $2 they would be fighting for every inch of lane to get to work faster Who the hell drives in NYC? |

Drivers in NYC are starting to pump and glide their cars because of high gas prices!! I used to play this game with my old stick shift. It works well if you know the roads. I'd accelerate then go to neutral and roll as long as possible and try to time it up with the hills for maximim distance. |

Nonsense urban legend from the 1980s.... no it's not, every EFI system is programmed to input extra fuel at start-up even if the engine is NOT cold. I've done plenty of ECU remaps. I know exactly what I'm talking about. |

I'm getting more gas mileage because of everyone pumping and gliding I use to get honked at and yelled at when I would pump and gliding during $2 gas days Looks who's laughing now |

They might save a few pennies in gas, that's it. They are more irritating than anything. |

People are going to start syponing for gas, it's best you get a gas cap The days of being able to leave a car without a locked gas cap, are coming to an end... |

Drivers in NYC are starting to pump and glide their cars because of high gas prices!! My parents mentioned coasting cars down hills during the Great Depression to save gas. Of course that was with a manual transmission. I don't know whether they would shut the engine off during the downhill glides. |

You'd loose steering and brakes You chuck it into neutral or chuck ya foot on clutch pedal to glide. |

Hey kid, it takes very little fuel to idle a modern car today do to how lean they burn. The fuel map is enriched on todays engines on startup. |

Drivers in NYC are starting to pump and glide their cars because of high gas prices!! It used to be called freewheeling decades ago when I got my first car as a teen with very little money. Loads of people used to do it. People generally had less money back then. It's obviously illegal because you're not in full control of your vehicle. |

Driving a stick shift I was coasting in neutral (illegally) probably 30% of the time. Even in my automatic vehicle now I'm still in the habit of having my foot off the accelerator and letting it roll but I don't know if that saves any gas. |
