You've Been Eating Gray Salmon with Synthetic Pink Pigments

Would you ever eat salmon that’s gray? If you consume farm-raised salmon, you’ve likely been eating gray salmon that’s dyed pink.

Salmon is one of the healthiest foods you could eat—if it’s the right kind. There is a big difference between farm-raised salmon and wild-caught salmon.

To make farm-raised salmon pink, they use synthetic astaxanthin. Natural astaxanthin has profound health benefits, but there aren’t any credible studies that show the synthetic version is safe for human consumption.

However, there has been a lot of research on synthetic antioxidants and the potential increased risk of cancer. Because the version of astaxanthin used in farm-raised salmon is a synthetic antioxidant, you should be aware there are no safety studies on it.

Other foods, like egg yolks and chicken, can also be dyed to achieve a color that people will pay more for. This is just another reason why you should consume wild-caught salmon, pasture-raised organic eggs, and organic chicken.

Benefits of natural astaxanthin:
• It’s 50 times stronger than synthetic astaxanthin in its ability to counter oxidation
• It’s 20 times stronger than synthetic astaxanthin in its ability to handle free radicals
• It has benefits for your eyes, brain, heart, and immune system
• It can provide UV protection
• It has anti-inflammatory properties
• It comes as a complex with at least five other carotenoids

If you can find Alaskan salmon, buy it. It's actually wild caught. The salmon I buy has a complete label showing the date and even the type of net that ws used. Look for FAS. That stands for Frozen At Sea. It is delicious BTW.

Fish farming was prohibited in Alaska many years ago.

Wild salmon are red because of their diet. They eat krill and other things that contain carotenoids.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

Wild salmon get their pink or even reddish colored flesh from what they eat in the wild.

The same exact thing can be seen with farmed trout vs wild trout. Wild trout have a pink flesh. Farmed trout flesh is white/gray.

Me either. Some cans from the national brands of tuna are from the Indian Ocean, look for “Product of Maldives” by the printed date codes. Atlantic tuna is much harder to find, and costs a mint anyway. Atlantic wild-caught salmon is great, but pricy.

You ever ate a fish?

I've eaten East Coast/West Coast, Minn, MT, CA, Ontario, BC, Ireland/France/England and I've never seen grey fleshed fish except once.

That was a frozen salmon at Smith's, from Indonisia or some such. When it thawed it was grey and looked really dead. Zombie dead. I've warned other shoppers not to buy that crap.

Every other fish I've ever bought or caught was white, pink or reddish pink.
