Yes and no. You're not taking into account the terrorist use of an EMP device that they purchase from a country like Iran or North Korea. A cyberattack on the US power grid could produce similar results, as could a solar flare.

Point being, it doesn't matter *why* the grid goes down, American society will face the same consequences.

What if there is an EMP with no obvious outside source? You know, one just goes off in kansas or something like that, with no rocket approaching from outside the nation's borders?

Nothing about loss of refrigeration and preparing the food that will go bad.

It doesn't matter if some government systems are harneded, the refineries, oil production, entire shipping a manufacturing systems, hospitals, financial systems...etc are all vulnerable. You stop the trucks for three days and you'll see looting a rioting that third night, and the beginning of collapse at the end of the week with tens of millions dead in the first month and a hundred or two hundred million dead after 6 months to a year. The rest of the world would actually probably prosper after they rebuild the financial sector.

Destroy the shipping ports, destroy the refineries and knock out the power, wait a few months and walk right in.

If there is no rocket, if some bad actor just trucked a nuclear device into Kansas, it would not be high enough in the atmosphere for a large scale EMP effect. There would be an EMP, but it would be highly localised and not nationwide.

These books would make a dedicated prepper out of your Uncle Bob. The reality of life without electricity is ever so much worse than not having refrigeration or a television. You can get a glimpse of how ugly and dire things will be by reading the book "One Second After" It will chill you to your very bones. I read it when it first came out in print.
Things will be so horrific you won't want to live....utterly horrible and brutal will gain new more intense meaning.

In the EMP age, everyone must plan to become as the Amish are, a primitive agrarian society.

Better yet, plan to migrate outside of the EMP zone where life goes on unperturbed. It's better to hear about a massive EMP event on the news than it is to live it in real life.

Refugees would begin pouring south on foot into Mexico, only to find that northern Mexico suffered collateral EMP damage themselves. Keep going south until you see lights on at night. And learn how to speak Spanish.

Or go to Alaska if you can make it. They might not be worth an EMP attack. But you may then need to learn how to speak Russian however. And forget about ever getting any supplies while up there. All their supplies come from CONUS.
