User ID: 77482022 United States 05/24/2022 04:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The world has just 10 weeks' worth of wheat stockpiled after Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine disrupted supplies from the "breadbasket of Europe". Quoting: telling it straight Several news outlets are reporting this story. This has the potential to get people panic buying IMO. The biggest outlet is one from the UK but for some reason I can’t post the link. Google this and you’ll see what I mean. There’s lots of coverage on this right now. There are other things to eat besides Wheat. Too much bread is not good for you anyhow. Z |

Quoting: JustmeTX This wastes arable land, fertilizer, etc etc. and doesn't even break even on the energy used to produce it. Plus corn is the worst crop there is for preservation of farmland. 40% of the US corn crop is devoted to making ethanol fuel. [link to www.agriculture.com (secure)] 5 billion bushels of corn a year is not chicken feed! :) Yep. Ridiculous that at a time like this (high fuel prices and food shortages) that THIS GOV shuts down oil production and USES FOOD FOR FUEL. Freaking insane. The corn used for ethanol is not typically consumed by humans. Don't confuse it with sweet corn. The point was to grow something else on that soil and use taht fertilizer to grow wheat or something. Also, field corn is used to make cornbread, masa, hominy, etc. Corn is corn for the most part. Justme |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 83195606 Australia 05/24/2022 10:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I would observe that the wheat and other crops will be sold to the highest bidder. If that bidder is in another country, the crop goes there. Even if that bidder is in your same country, you get soaring prices. Quoting: Lowkey Cyberpunk Neither situation is something to be complacent about. would be the futures market. you buy a contract to get future delivery. can be anyone in the world. Not true. Countries have export controls and can deny an export permit/license for any reason they want. It is why I don't care if the Chinese buy all the farms in Australia because technically the government can stop any of the food being exported. |
