In the 1970s, the high school I went to in SE PA brought in armed security personnel the year after I graduated. This was because the school had previously been wide open for drug use and sales. After a teacher was beaten in a boys rest room for being on "rest room patrol" looking for cigarette smoking and drug use, the teachers refused to perform that duty and said it wasn't in their job description. During the time I was a student there, if you wanted to buy drugs, you did it at school. If you wanted to get stoned at lunch, you just went outside the front of the cafeteria and somebody would be burning a doob. It was a large suburban high school like portrayed in Fast Times At Ridgemont High. |
