DOES IT BOTHER YOU TO CHOP OFF THEIR HEADS AT SLAUGHTER TIME? Global rabbit meat market has increased and will continue to grow The global rabbit meat market revenue amounted to $6.4 billion in 2017, picking up by 12% against the previous year. The country with the largest volume of rabbit meat consumption was China (925K tonnes), comprising approximately 62% of the total consumption. Moreover, rabbit meat consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world’s second-largest consumer, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (154K tonnes), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Egypt (57K tonnes), with a 3.8% share. Driven by increasing demand for rabbit meat worldwide, the market is expected to continue an upward consumption trend over the next decade. Market performance is forecast to retain its current trend pattern, expanding with an anticipated CAGR of +2.3% for the eight-year period from 2017 to 2025, which is projected to bring the market volume to 1.8 million tonnes by the end of 2025. There are stories about that, for instance when Canada was being explored the only thing those guys could find to eat was rabbits, but it could not sustain them. I've always heard that but people seem to raise them anyway so who knows. Rabbit disease is not a lack of nutrients or protein, but fat. Mountain men in particular and in Canada where rabbits are prolific. They are still eaten regularly by indigenous people and have been for thousands of years. They just supplement fat. |

DOES IT BOTHER YOU TO CHOP OFF THEIR HEADS AT SLAUGHTER TIME? I raised rabbits for food several times ... they are quite delicious, and it is my understanding, have more protein than chickens. The problem with rabbits is that they dig ... so I found that the best way to raise them was in a pit ... about six feet deep - so they can't jump out - they will burrow into the walls and make nests for their young, so you don't even have to build a hutch but they will not burrow up that far... I tried other methods, even once built a cement mote -that they burrowed under quite easily ... with a pit, you can just toss a bail of alfalfa into the center, once a week or once a month depending on how many you have ... I recommend organic hay if you can find it. you will still need to put a fence around the pit, to keep predators out (cats love the kits) ... but you can just string a hose down into the pit for water in a 10-15 gal tub with a block in the middle in case the bunnies fall in - so they won't drown... my pit was a 10 foot wide circle. Kept a ladder handy As for butchering, I found it best to butcher a bunch of the younger ones, at one time - that way you don't have to do it so often (twice a year) and put them in the freezer. I don't kill what I raise - never could, but I've always had a family member or neighbor, who had no problem doing it in exchange for meat ... I can do all the rest (once their heads are off) A buck and 3 doe s should be all you need for fresh meat, year-round. I found that the "giant" breeds were the best to raise (more meat) you can probably still pick up bunnies for $5-10 at a local swap meet - the giants have about 10 kit - every 3 months - you can keep your buck separate to regulate production ... bucks will fight if you have more than one - but not until they are adults (3-6 mos) but you need to use them at least once a month or they will go sterile. They also produce EXCELENT fertilizer for your garden - people will pay $20-50 for a feed bag full for their roses. yes, they are a cheap and easy form of delicious meat - that don't need much care and don't get sick if they have plenty of room to exercise. DOES IT BOTHER YOU TO CHOP OFF THEIR HEADS AT SLAUGHTER TIME? Rabbits are a great source of meat and breed like rabbits! And unlike chickens, they are quiet, which is good for not attracting unwanted attention. Quoting: I AM I WILL It's hard to kill any living animal for food, chickens, even fish. You just do it as quickly and humanely as possible. If they were living in the wild, their death would be much more terrifying, painful and traumatic. ^^^that^^^ Rabbit tastes a lot like chicken, so at least it adds flavor. microgreens are a cheap alternative to purchasing food at a store. Suggestion: print out directions on how butcher animals so you don't contaminate the meat. Unless you're well versed from the kill to the table that is. |

Do the rabbits seems like pets, and then you have to chop their head off one day? Is that ever a psychological problem? Ideas? :CATAFFE: I'm pro meat rabbit My tips: Look at the hopper popper to dispatch. Very easy and you can build one yourself. Get non gmo pellets. Alfalfa is heavily gmo. It would be a shame to put work into raising your meat and feed gmo. Rabbit starvation happens when you have lean rabbits and nothing else. If you're supplementing your diet with other foods and healthy fed rabbits, you're fine. Look into building a portable tractor for your grow outs. They can have access to grass which not only reduces your purchased feed consumption but also gets them all the healthy omegas. Get meat lines - don't go cheap and just get any rabbit. Meat breeds are very affordable, don't be afraid to get mixed breed meat types as well. Save the manure for your garden, seriously good stuff for plants and attracts worms. As you get more experienced, maybe start growing your own rabbit food - sunflower seeds, wheats, roots like mangels. I've been raising meat rabbits for 10+ years, take some of raising your own food into your own hands and give big AG and the government the finger. Want to be defiant? Grow and raise your own food! |

DOES IT BOTHER YOU TO CHOP OFF THEIR HEADS AT SLAUGHTER TIME? So my nephew raised rabbits for several yrs. Excellent source of protein but pretty much zero fat, so very lean meat. They were kept in a pen/house. When it came time for harvesting, he'd hold them by their back feet with their heads on the ground, step on their heads and pull up hard on their feet snapping their necks. They'd flop around on the ground for several minutes until still. Then cut the skin around their necks and pull the skin off. Gut 'em, into a freezer bag and into the freezer. Great addition to chicken meat as an alternative. He doesn't have room to do rabbits anymore but the meat was great. Do it. |
