The soil is perfect for this purpose. It's alluvial till deposited in an island around the tree, a mixture of sand and mud that dried but isn't fully sandstone yet. The roots form her ceiling. Smoke is a dead giveaway so alcohol lamp or gas grill is the way to go if possible. Extra points for her camouflage job. The whole entrance is one big sign which is why most people would ignore it. It's too big to be anything unnatural. People will look for fire rings, foot prints, flattened spots, not 15 ' wide strips of turf replaced.

Also a lot of smoke to alert others where she is. I saw a similar ground "breathing" on TV, like when she was tapping it. Some people were hiking and they came upon a place in the woods where the ground was swelling up and down. I guess now I know it was a cave with people right under!
