I like the people of Brasil very much, but they do have crazy high crime rates and murder rates. And loads of corruption.

Northeast Brasil is predominently black at least from my limited experience. At least El Salvador was mostly black.

Housing complexes surrounded by concrete walls 30 feet high, topped with high voltage power lines, broken glass inset into the concrete, and usually a guard house in front with several heavily armed guards. (machine guns).

I used to go walking around the various towns after meeting with customers. The hotel manager would pull me aside and tell me that I was going to die if I kept walking around town.

I had way overtipped a limo driver who actually had a very nice Mercedes (the air conditioner actually worked and the car was spotless) and that guy was like a guardian angel in the one town. I could go out eat, get a little inebriated, and come out and he would be there waiting for me to give a ride back to the hotel.

Sao Paulo, Rio, Santos, Curitiba, Cubatao, Vitoria have a fair amount of European descent population. And a lot of them run restaurants with the best food on Earth (at least that I have encountered). Best Italian food ever. :)
