I think this is one of those type of tricks where it's predictive. Red draws your eye to Brainstorm first time, after that it's natural to check the other one on the second try, so it's green needle.

Easy way to debunk it is only look at Green Needle while thinking the word brainstorm the entire time.

Brainstorm is first for sure (even if you're looking at Green Needle), then Green Needle Second.

Wonder if it has to do with the colors the phrases are set in.

I can only has the red needle (brainstorm) all the time, but then again I'm in a restaurant with a bit of people and listening through a mid range phone speaker, I'll try some stereo headphones when I get home.

If I look at green needle and think brainstorm, I hear brainstorm. If I look at brainstorm and think green needle, I can only get brainstorm. I cannot hear green needle unless I’m looking at it. Thinking about it won’t work.

I covered the words and heard someone speaking, it had nothing to do with reading but associating a link between the visual and auditory. The words are garbled...so player beware.
