Super warm weather here today finally. I plan on sleeping. Work wears me out. Acquired a job. It sucks but others count on me and I am proud of my job well done. That works for me right now. Someone earlier mentioned flower gardening. What I find wonderful about my outdoor landscaping/flower gardening areas is the need to think both 3-dimensionally while factoring in the element of time.

What will this plant/shrub/tree/flower look like in 2 months, or in 2 years, or in 6 years? How will it look in the winter? What vertical shape will this entire area take in a few months/years? What is my goal here? And how do I fix the holes where something doesn't survive like I planned, or where I'm tired of buying new annuals every year? What are the water and sun requirements in this area? How much pruning and clearing will be needed during each season?

It's very physical and mental "work" for me. Hubby calls it my "playing in the dirt." I call it "finding my zen."

I have several areas: a silver garden, a color garden, a vegetable garden (which is too much work for too little return, so I let the herbs grow and forget it), a purple/burgundy garden outside my office window, an asian-inspired garden around my daughter's pergola/patio area (which hubby and I built with great effort, care, and satisfaction), and then there's my fairy garden.

The fairy garden is basically gardening in miniature. The problem with that is that stuff grows, so it has to be maintained a lot. Good thing I like doing that!

In the center of the fairy garden is a bonsai tree. It provides dappled shade for the fairy pool below it, as the limbs cantilever over a little cliff I built up for it. The pool has some tiny furniture around it, which fairies would enjoy. (This all delighted my daughter when she was younger. Now she still shows it to her teenage friends, who appreciate it more than you might expect.)

The bonsai needs trimming at least three times a year to keep its bonsai-ness. It hurts to do it. My knees and back no longer enjoy the effort. However, it brings me great joy to see it well kept, so I still do it.

And if I keep the fairy pool filled with rain water (fill it every day in the summer), the Carolina wrens use it as their personal bird bath. Their chirping sounds like giggling, and it brings me such simple joy.

So that's what I meant when I responded with one simple word: bonsai.
