Not a glitch. Companies are reporting massive losses for the second quarter and saying that the outlook is uncertain or negative.

Venezuela is a different kind of place. They had/have actual monetary inflation, in the same way Rome did.

The US is different. We have price inflation and a temporary inflation of the circulating money supply due to consumer credit expansion, but we don't have monetary inflation, at least in terms of circulating supply. And in fact, the increase in reserves, which is why the M1 money supply went up so sharply, is actually deflationary to the circulating money supply, which is why velocity has been going down steadily.

That's why the fed has been saying that this inflation is transitory. It surprised everyone how persistent it's been, but that's been due in large part to a combination of supply shortages, corporate greed, and public perceptions.

Moreover, the credit that has been responsible for the inflation is now spent, and now that money must be repaid. That's especially rapidly deflationary in terms of revolving credit. New money gets created when people take out loans, but it gets destroyed when they either pay them off or default. If there are widespread defaults, we could see the money supply almost vanish overnight.

It's a glitch. It's down that much from last Wednesday's close, not Friday's.
