I just payed off my new car last week. I won't be needing another as I will easily get 400,000 miles out of her. Good luck to all....

It took us about 6 months to find a good used commuter car for our son, and he had cash saved up. The large dealerships are pretty useless right now but we found a Honda CRV at a small dealer. High milage, but every Honda we've ever had has been indestructible.

We sold our Audi that took premium gas last year. It was a nice car but was too unreliable and expensive to give to our kids. A college kid got his dad to buy it for him, with a full explanation from my husband about its issues. He paid a fair price and we didn't lose any money on it.

It’s been 5 months waiting on a car for my son.
I am SHOCKED. The prices are skyrocketing and everything is on back order.
It seems impossible to get a new car.

it makes no sense. in the past years hundred of thousand of new cars were unsold and placed in humongous parking lots i. the desert.

were are those cars now??
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81065075

Oh no, they were being sold. Demand was strong and inventories needed to be very deep. Car dealers were sitting on lots built in the 80's and 90's lacking space for such huge inventories. You see a glass half full, the dealers had a glass half empty.

Re: Any one else recently try to buy a car and got shocked?
In the UK I was looking to buy a decent shelled Lexus IS200 manual with a view to dropping a 1UZFE (V8) in it...

Originally was looking at £1000-1500 for a half decent one with an MOT and now the same ones are going for 3/4000!!

They don’t want us to have autonomy in older cars that aren’t traceable or electric.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79504291

WTF do you want a V-8 in that car?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83586973

Wanted a cheap 4 door saloon, I like Jap cars and I love v8s. Front engine rear wheel drive perfect for track days. Something a bit different.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79504291

When I was in high school and my first year of college I had a 240-Z I got for a song.

I wish I still had that car but by the time I sold it , it was rusted very badly from the northern New York salt.

If I were you though I would leave the original engine in it, what you want to do is not easy and will give you endless problems. It used to be you could just take one engine out one car and put it in any other essentially with a few modifications, now the entire electrical system is linked to that engine and its computer.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83586973

I bet you enjoyed that 240 especially in college years, I had an MR2 mk2 NA at 18 lol loved it.

I’m not going ahead with the car and conversion anyway as I’m saving but the 1UZFE drops in on the standard mounts and there’s plenty of gearbox conversion kits here to mount up to the j160 (and others) and most people just use the ls400 ecu but I’d have gone full standalone Link as I intended on upgrading gearbox and power later on.

I recently bumped in to the guy I sold my MR2 to, brought back some great memories although not for him as he binned it on the motorway apparently.

They don’t want us to have cars though that’s for sure.

They are also charging you extra if you pay in cash vs financing. I believe they are adding $5,000 to the total if you don't use financing
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82286860

I guess the play then would be to finance with a no early payment penalty, and then just pay it off right away?

My sister recently bought a Corolla Cross, apparently there aren't too many on the road yet. She gets calls from the dealership asking if she'll bring it in because people want to see the actual vehicle and they have none.

Manufacturer's aren't sending cars to lots anymore, where my sister bought hers, they were having people order cars for a $500 deposit and then when the cars got there, the people got their money back. Only way they can get a car on the lot now.

Went car shopping over the weekend and it was quite unsettling.

Empty lots

Waiting lists for months to get a new regular car (not EV or luxury).

Used cars almost as expensive as new models.

“Market Adjustment fees” of 3-4 thousand extra added on.

Somebody that needs a car desperately is going to be in for a surprise.

You failed to mention the outrageous sticker prices of what passes for a family car these days. Even before you look at the rest of the sticker prices alone are out of control....only the very few can afford to buy a car now.

All dealerships are moving to an on demand or “agency” model. There will
Only be a few cars on the lot to see and test drive, then you order your can and it shows up in 6-8 weeks. Record profits and no inventory in the new way.

This is not the first time this has happened. It should now say France.

Re: Any one else recently try to buy a car and got shocked?
Guys I have info you might have overlooked on this subject

Back in 2016 or so, I was shocked to discover that banks were bundling and selling car notes as investments exactly as they had done with subprime mortgages before.

Now, WHY IN UNHOLY HELL would you bundle a depreciating asset as an investment? The answer is that "you" wouldn't, because that is insane, BUT, banks did it because the inflation/deflation cycle is planned decades in advance and now you are seeing them inflate the used car market so they can bail out of those car note bundles and/or let them rot and trigger the maltdown that is only just beginning.

THEY BUNDLED CAR NOTES AS INVESTMENTS!!!!!!

WWWWWWWWWWWWW

!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80114030

Wow.

That causes a lot of this to make sense.

Until a couple of years ago a seven year financing for a car was unheard of.

They will soon have 10 year financing and you will need a second mortgage.
