I have a particular set of skills

and I can be 145 pounds or 1450 pounds and still do my job

I'm about 220 - 225 pounds and have been for the last 10 years

and I can still do physical labor without huffing n puffing

I get your your point, but you can't run a society based upon lucky genes. Some folks have not won the genetic lottery, sounds like you have. We're all just one injury away from a similar fate. Some people are gluttons but I don't think all folks with weight problems or other health issues fall into same category. And for the record, I won the genetic lottery, and I understand that success in life is at least 50% luck.

I kin of agree I know you're healthcare in the US isn't free unlike Ireland which has your system for those who can afford it, and the UK free one for everyone, but waiting times are terribly long... I honestly believe to encourage people to be healthy and within there BMI they should get a tax break Of 5-10%... But we know the pharma industry needs overweight slobs to make billions so it will never happen..

It's easy to imagine if you were ship wrecked and certain people had the skills to make you survive, you'd make sure they were well fed and kept.

These people would be those with fishing skills, gathering skills, building skills, medical skills, cooking skills, ability to fix things, sew things, maybe even the person who is good at forecasting weather or tides. The fire starter. The firewood gatherer. The child babysitter.

Those who did nothing would get the leftovers. No matter how attractive or fit.

Why not? How will you measure physical fitness? Why would it be any harder to measure IQ there is a simple 2 hour test that can do this. How about a hybrid system, we can test for strength for $$$, But if your IQ isnt over 120 you cant vote?

It's not about genes. Physical fitness is the one and only virtue where hard work gets results. Someone can liposuction off fat reserves, but that doesn't build strength of help your organs

Yes, I think actually that some things people do for health is bad for their bodies.

I remember when there was a very famous marathoner, had a heart attack.

I knew an aerobics instructor with a beer belly.

I knew a black belt who died of cancer.

I think you have things backwards, your body works for you, you don't work on it. You use your body to be productive.

I work physically hard many days of the year. You'd think I'd be the healthiest old lady around. I'm not really that healthy. I probably spend MORE days on the couch, hurt, than women who have sedentary jobs.

The fact of the matter is the human body doesn't last forever, and wear and tear happens.

Plus, you said fitness is the "one and only virtue where hard work gets results". There are an infinite number of other virtuous things you can do with your life that get results. You could practice guitar. You could learn a programming language. You could write a memoire. You could learn to cook. You could paint your parent's house. You could plant an apple tree.

I would even say that working out for the sake of muscle is a waste of time. I always do productive things with my muscles. When I walk past the gym I think the people inside are silly. Like hamsters on wheels. They should at least hook up the stationary bikes to charge up batteries or something, LOL.
