This is what we did using regular plywood and pictures and paint then epoxy over that.

CORIAN takes no special care like granite or marble or quartz

I love mine

Remember : NOTE!!!!!! Below

If you had traditional countertops - you’re not set up for the EXTRA WEIGHT of solid surface countertops !!!

Many people put granite over after Formica was there … and it sunk into the cupboards ….

Make sure you have it built for the WEIGHT!

CORIAN is only 1/2” thick with built up edge to look 1” - another reason we went with it .

Two by four, wide enough to make a countertop the size you want, have them put together with a dowel rod and glue super tight then sand and stain them the way you desire, and then heavy polyethylene it and do it again so it is super water proof. Cut the place for your sink which every type you want, this makes a nice looking and heavy-duty countertop. You can also inlay a cutting board area.

My God you people are all offering shitty advice.

OP, there's two practical options. Stone or preform Formica. Personally I'd spend the extra and do granite. Don't waste your money on quartz.

Your cabinets will support the weight.

Solid surface is actually another name for Corian. It sucks really bad. Scratches. Very heat sensitive.

I have a huge marble slab for baking reasons, but I wouldn't mind having it all over. It just looks tacky, though.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

It all depends on how much you plan to spend on it. If you want something more durable and upscale then this is definitely a marble countertop [link to www.graniteausommet.com (secure)] But she needs special care. Ordered from these guys and was satisfied with the service and quality of service.

Granite (especially Absolute Black) would be WAY more durable and less susceptible to wear an tear as, well as scratching and chipping as opposed to marble...

I like the way soap stone looks (dull black). But I don't have it, can't speak to how it works out.

I like the way butcher block looks new, but it seems to wear out.

I have solid surface and I like the way it looks, but people are right, it hasn't really lasted (chips, cracks etc). However, I still LIKE it, more than I like the way granite can look-- so busy and shiny and kind of modern.

I'm not saying granite and marble aren't nice though. Just not my style.

You can get big pieces of good-quality marble and granite for free. Look out for places signposted 'cemeteries' as that's where you find them. They'll come with letters engraved into the slabs so make sure you face that side down as the letters easily get full of crumbs.

BTW.....Formica laminate sheets are the way to go...rather durable...the cost is right and on an older house who cares. Actually the styles look like stone or tons of other styles. With all the money you'd save use it to buy gas or food.

do your homework, licensed and insured, does not mean they will be honest or do a good job. It gives the contractor the right to put a mechanics lien on your property.

Go to a stone producer and see if he has any remnants of Quartz. He may be able to do the job cheaper than granite. I have done this multiple times as a contractor.

Granite needs to be sealed occasionally.
It's porous and not as clean as synthetic materials.

OP look into replacing the laminate.
