Why did the valley girl accent become dominant in English?
Was it just the influence of Hollywood with the valley girl accent originating right next to Hollywood?

I am asking because I am watching the video embedded below. The three guys in this video all have distinct, classic valley girl accents. It cheapens the seriousness of the topic. Why did the valley girl accent become dominant in English?

I am from the Pacific North West and I do not hear an accent. I guess if you were from the South, burbs, motown, British or what ever county, you would not hear your local accent either. The rest of your accents are hard for me to understand and sound loco to me.

Oliva Rodrigo has the most pure valley girl accent I think I have heard. She grew up in Southern California, so it's almost mandatory for someone like her.

I am not kidding. I grew up in Southern California, and even my mother in her 70s does the valley girl thing frequently.

I do not hear an accent there either. I mean these people have weird things to say and expressions but I am not hearing a distinct accent they have in common.

The valley girl style of speaking is referred to as an accent such as what the woman in the following video says when she tries to do it. She calls it an accent.

Other people call it a dialect:

Valspeak or Valley Speak is a social class dialect (or sociolect) said to have originated among materialistic young upper-class white women in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley during the 1970s. It came to be more widely popularized after the 1982 release of Frank Zappa’s parody music single Valley Girl in which his teenage daughter, Moon Zappa, monologued in the dialect behind his music. The dialect was also popularized by actresses Tracy Nelson in the TV comedy series Square Pegs (1882-1983), Cassandra Peterson in the role of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (beginning 1981) and Alicia Silverstone in the film Clueless (1995).

I find it hilarious that the woman in that video uses the valley girl style of speaking way before she does it all the way later on. She has a British accent, so this is evidence for my point that the valley girl style of speaking is dominant in English, but I really shouldn't have to prove that because it's so obvious.

This is kind of sore point for me because I am a little ashamed that I speak that way sometimes. I think I tend to do it when I get a little confused. I think it goes hand in hand with brain fog. chuckle

Depends of region OP. There are many dialects that influences the way a person speaks. Its not uncommon to have several distinct ones in one country.

Elvira is 70 years old now. In that video, she says she used to be a Valley Girl herself. Historians think it all started in the 1970s, but I think based on that video it goes back to at least the 1960s.

That video is incredible to me for so many reasons.

I am well aware of that. I think the reason the valley girl accent became dominant in English was what the Red Hot Chili Peppers pointed out in 1999. There was no way to stop Californication.
