It was found in Naples, Fl. Not the Everglades.
 Quoting: Spy5021

Keewaydin Island is part of the Everglades. And Naples is directly connected to Miami through the Everglades. And animals don't know borders. Maps are fun.

So much myth around these invasive pythons. Human nature to blow everything out of proportion.

A snake that size eats like once every 3 months. They aren't decimating wildlife populations. Just cuz scientists can't walk off alligator alley and slap a deer on the ass doesn't mean snakes ate them all.

All the swamp below Okeechobee is made for animals to live and thrive. Everything is perfectly fine. If biologists really wanted to do something, they'd fuck with the pythons DNA like they do mosquitos there. Critical thinking people!

That's a good point. those mosquitos are using GMO technology developed by the same company responsible for dumping GMO mosquitos in Brazil at the same time they had the zika outbreak and accompanying microcephaly in pregnant women's babies.
All on its way to the Florida Everglades.

Oxitec/ Bill Gates funds it in some way through his foundation

- "Genetically-modified mosquitoes are showing promise in controlling other vector-borne diseases, so we look forward to exploring their use alongside complementary interventions for malaria," Gates Foundation malaria director Philip Welkhoff said in a press release at the time.

first and last paragraphs from the article.

- In late April, the biotechnology company Oxitec placed blue-and-white hexagonal boxes on the properties of six private volunteers around the Florida Keys. After pouring in water, the genetically modified mosquito eggs inside activated and hatched.

- “As you can imagine, emotions run high, and there are people who feel really strongly either for or against it,” says molecular biologist Natalie Kofler, the founder of Editing Nature, an advocacy organization focused on oversight and responsible development of gene-editing technologies, to Emily Waltz at Nature News. “And I can see how, if you didn’t agree to this, it could be really concerning to have mosquitoes released in your neighborhood.”

In 1975 the Everglades were in nice balance. Then some dumbasses made alligators endangered. Now there's a huge alligator problem because those policies aren't followed up.

Also, the Army Corp of Engineers in the 1950's Rickenbacker crew also started the canal system. This was another factor of the decline, because it attracted residents to Miami and surrounding areas by adding sewer and powerlines to remote areas around the Everglades.

Was in the Everglades last summer and they stated that 90% of the animal species in the Everglades have been eliminated in the last 20-30 years due to pythons.

They are doing everything they can to kill them.

Re: Largest Burmese python in Florida history discovered in the Everglades
Burmese pythons are quite fascinating creatures. They tend to be very lazy (as most boid species are) and spend most of their time sitting in one place resting. To move their bodies requires extreme amounts of energy so they are not apt to attack anyone or anything unless it is to eat or for defensive purposes. In the wild they are often observed feasting on roadkill or otherwise deceased animals simply because it is easier than hunting something and they can go back to chilling in the sun or resting in trees.

The problem stems from when Hurricane Andrew hit Florida and destroyed some herpetological breeding facilities that were raising these snakes for zoos and the pet trade. Most tend to blame unscrupulous pet owners who release these into the wild when they start to get around 10 feet long and they no longer can afford to feed them or dedicate space to keeping them. They can be hard to care for because they urinate and defecate like a horse, require very large enclosures that could almost double as another room in your home and unless it is built very well they will escape because most pythons are true escape artists.

Back in the day it was not uncommon for pet stores to sell juvenile Burmese pythons as juvenile ball pythons. Most pet store owners did not know the different themselves but there is a massive difference between the two as ball pythons are extraordinarily docile and make fantastic pets for first time snake owners. So certainly some wound up intentionally released by idiots but this was a very small number compared to the mass release from storm damage which makes many of the restrictive laws in place around the country regarding these species absolutely ridiculous.

Nobody in Florida needs to live in fear of these creatures. IF you leave them alone they will leave you alone. That said, they are a detriment to the ecosystem as they are not intended to be here but neither are domesticated cats who cause a thousand times more damage to the ecosystem than snakes do. If you live outside of Florida or the extreme southern coast you don't need to worry about them at all because even if they do wind up in the wilds around you they will not survive through the first cold night

Re: Largest Burmese python in Florida history discovered in the Everglades
Why do they want to keep it alive? Probably planning to keep the eggs, too. The snake should be killed and then brought in. They should pay for every dead snake in the round up. That's too big a predator to keep alive. Large enough to eat a child or a pet. Being non-native, if they want to keep it alive it should be returned to Burma. If Burma don't want it then they can kill it.

Seriously!!! We killed a copperhead out here at the sanctuary last week and I tossed it in the incinerator. About five minutes later the most delicious smell started wafting from the incinerator. I mean it smelled like roasting chicken. From now on when we catch a copperhead I’m gonna eat it. Lol I’ve never eaten a snake before but I’m gonna give it a try.

These freakin' people with their damn constrictor snakes. The whole reason these damn snakes are now throughout Florida by the millions is because these goofballs.

I kept a pet gator once, and looking back now I felt that was stupid (and big time illegal now). But, even so, it was native to Florida, where I grew up, and even at it's largest is no match for these damn snakes. They're actually pretty timid and tameable.

These snakes are extremely dangerous, and snakes in general are hard to read. Although they may appear to be "friendly" to their owners, they're untrustworthy. If that thing decides it's killing time, that dumb bitch will be finished.

I'm no expert, just an opinion of somebody that grew up around lots of these things and loved going and exploring as a kid.

The best thing to do with that one is make boots out of it.

Many years ago where I grew up I knew a family that kept a giant boa.

The daughter - who was my age - loved it and "played" with it all the time. The snake slept in a giant cage in her bedroom.

One day they notice it's starting to change color and get really skinny. They figure it's sick and take it to the vet.

Vet tells them it's starving itself and getting ready to eat the young daughter. Tells the family he has to put it down or it'll eat the girl - and according to the vet once the snake makes up their mind on what they're eating there's no changing it.

They put the snake down and the daughter was terrified of them after that. She actually thought the thing loved her like a dog.

Another one...

My cousin's live in Florida and down the block they knew a couple who had a snake sneak into the house and swallow their newborn baby during the night - killing it in the process - the mom went into feed it the next morning and found the snake. The husband killed it and cut it open trying to save his child. Obviously it was too late at that point.

These are real stories. Not urban legends.

They are evil incarnate and must be eradicated. The world would do fine without them. A movement towards killing all of them would be wonderful.

These things deserve death and nothing else.
